I have very unhealthy ways of coping with depression and loneliness, and I would love some suggestions for better strategies

For me, taking jiu-jitsu classes has helped a lot. I don't go as often as I should. It's hard to find the motivation and to convince myself to go. I make up excuses to not go sometimes, but I know I'd be better if I just went. If I don't go, then I feel more angry and hateful towards people.

I feel stupid while I'm doing it and sometimes I feel like I'm going to throw up (which I have done a couple times.) But once you get through it, then you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and pride. It's also great for meeting people. At the end, we all line up and shake hands or hug and I always tell them "It was good to see you" or "thank you for training with me."

You don't have to do jiu-jitsu. That's just what interests me. But I feel like choosing some sort of social activity, especially if it's a physical one, would be my advice. Just know that it's a learning experience and there will always be those off-putting, awkward experiences that will make you want to quit. Try to push through that and persevere. The place I go to is also very welcoming to everyone and most people there are really kind. Try to find similar spaces like that.

Best wishes, Cain
