Depression and Loneliness in a foreign country

I'm not use to these things but I figured it could be a way to express my feelings without badgering my family (mainly my mother and brother) with all my unhappiness and anger.

I don't want to bring them down with me. It's hard for them as it is to me in regards to feeling helpless. We live in different countries as I decided to Marry someone from a different country. I'm unhappy in my marriage, work life, and social life. Anyone out there been through this and have suggestions? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

There is so much more one needs to know to provide suggestions. What is it about your marriage life that you are unhappy about? What about your social life? Maybe add in some details if you don't mind?

It sounds like you are experiencing a really hard time :( I completely understand your situation. I am also living in a foreign country and even though I have been living here for two years, I still feel like if it was the first day I arrived at the country since settling down is never easy and creating a whole new life is difficult. Sometimes it is about being lucky to find the right people, friends, work, etc. But do not give up. With time and with your commitment things can get better. Perhaps with work, choosing to view your pain from a different, more helpful perspective. With your social life, try to go to places where you can make friends, I am not saying that it is going to be easy, but eventually, you will make friends as if it was back at home. Something that I learnt from my experience was to not forget who I am and the things I used to like to do. You are in a new place, try to remember all those things you used to enjoy and do and bring them into this new place. Commit yourself to a life that you will value. For instance, I used to play guitar and sing, and when I arrived here I forgot about that. It took me time to remember who I was and to do all those things again in this new place. I hope this was helpful!!

Hi. Thanks for sharing your story with us. I'm so sorry to hear that you've been unhappy since moving to a new country. It sounds like you have a lot on your shoulders, from your relationship to the social situations outside of it too. We often hope that marriage will make our lives happy, but the huge sacrifices we sometimes have to make for it can still take a toll on us.

I try to have a self care routine when I'm down, this includes all the hobbies that I can channel my negative energies into. They help me develop and grow in ways that I like, such as practicing art, and it gives me a sense of achievement/satisfaction when I can't get it from other areas of my life. Other things may also include exercise and even skincare. It reminds me that I am worth something even when I'm feeling lost and depressed.

Best of luck!

Hi;

I read your post and I just would like to encourage you in you fight. You are not alone - there are millions of people that feel depressed, anxious and alone, for a variety of reasons. Immigrating to a foreign country is NOT easy, I have been there myself so I can testify. I think that you have to find a community of like-minded people that can serve as your support group. What worked for me was attending a local church where they had Celebrate Recovery meetings - for people with hurts, bad habits and hangups (we all fit in that actegory, just not many of us are willing to admit it). It is a safe place where you can openly talk about your struggles. Through church, you can also sign up for a volunteering project - helping someone else in need can immediately lift up your mood. I think you neeed affirmation, love and sense of belonging. Living abroad makes yiou feel like you don't belong sometimes...Just know, that there is hopeand healing out there my friend. May God bless you abundantly!

I can only say that I feel your pain... I too moved to a foreign country and have become quite lonely. Maybe we can get in touch and support each other?
