Depression and the military

It's not easy being in the military and having depression, there's really no time for it. The stigma that goes along with trying to get help is too much to deal with it puts your career at risk your peers and the people that work for you and the people you work for they would look down on you if they knew. So you suffer in silence until even the silence is unbearable and now you are not only fighting a physical war on the outside but one on the inside too

@Splitbug Hello. You write very well, using war to describe how it feels. Society tends to put a huge emphasis on being strong without truly understanding what it means. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable, to say you struggle, to say you endure depression all takes great strength. Depression also means you feel strong emotions which can, I think, become overwhelming in a world where people are encouraged to keep it together, carry on. It's misunderstood and so people then feel wrong for feeling that way, particularly in environments where it can - wrongly - be perceived as a weakness. It really isn't and I'm sorry you haven't had the support you need. It must be incredibly isolating. For what it's worth, keep writing through your feelings, if you've found writing on here helpful. It can be deeply cathartic and you have the expression in your words that could help both yourself and others. There are people on the site who are also in the military, ex military, so it may help to talk to them. No one can truly understand an experience unless they've been through it themselves. I've no knowledge of military life, but if you ever need someone to talk to, need support, I'll gladly help. Take care and I hope things get better for you. Janet
