Depression in the Media & Pop Culture
Hi there, Depression Community! I noticed depression has become a bit more visible in the media and tv shows lately. For instance, in a Canadian tv show, Maya experiences depression, and we are able to see some of it and how she tries to cope with it. There also has been more celebrities coming forward to talk about depression or incidents about celebrities and depression that is talked about.
What do you think of the media's portrayal of depression? What does the media or pop culture get right about depression, and what does it get wrong? Lastly, how do you think the media can improve in talking about depression?

What do you think of the media's portrayal of depression? I think the media especially tv shows do not show the reality of depression. Most of them glamorize it so that it looks nice and quite artificial like love does not always cure depression. Its not very representative of the population that do have depression.
What does the media or pop culture get right about depression, and what does it get wrong? I think the song "logic" has been the only thing I've hear that just talks about depression properly like there's more to depression then just being sad or wanting to die. There's mood swings, lack of appetite, this urge to be alone but it varies from person to person.
Lastly, how do you think the media can improve in talking about depression? I think there needs to be shows dedicated to mental issue topics such as depression because its taboo in some culture but it is something that everyone needs to be educated on. It needs to be less triggering like 13 reasons why lead to some people thinking it is okay to die and just blame others.
