Helping a friend with Depression

Sometimes whenever I asked my friend if hes alrite and he says hes fine/good I believe him but I dont know if hes telling me the truth or not. He seemed like he was in a better mood a few months ago when I was talking to him but I dont know if hes faking it or not. I didnt even think he was depressed. I thought he was getting better but since I havent talked to him in months I dont know if hes back in a dark place again. What should I do?
