Help me help my significant other. I don't know what to do.
Please help me. Two months ago I met a girl and we got together only to find out that she has gone through absolutely the worst childhood anyone can go through. She has been slowly telling me about her childhood part by part and it only gives me reason to worry even more due to the fact that she has severe depression, as well as severe anxiety, severe panic attacks, bipolarity, and suicidal thoughts. She is basically an outcast in her own family. Her mother does not pay any attention to her because she is too engulfed glorifying her new boyfriend, her siblings ignore her and she feels helpless. I want to build a support group for her but I don't know how to get the idea off the ground. Again, please help.
@Derpy I'm sorry to hear about all that your partner has gone through, and I really appreciate you reaching out on her behalf. The fact that you are here and trying to find ways to support her better shows that your idea is already off the ground and running! There isn't necessarily anything you need to "do" for her, but the most important thing is to let her know that you care and you're happy to support her any way possible, even if it means just being with her as she tries to help herself. You might find the answers to this question helpfulabout how to support someone going through depression.
Derpy, i can relate, i dont know how much, to what your friend may be going through. This past summer, i went to see a counselor for the first time in my life. I decided to go because i had been feeling the worst i ever had before and crying a lot. The biggest reasons i thought why were because my mom passed awa summer of 2013 and i found out a girl i loved very much, from my past, had actually passed away 7 years ago. During the first or second session with my counselor, she asked if i had ever been sexually abused before. I was so shocked as to how she could have known. I proceeded to tell her what i had gone through. My father had started doing some inappropriate touching that made me uncomfortable when i was 5 years old. When i was 12 years old, he called me into his bedroom when my mom was at work, and he made me take off my lower clothes and he sexually molested me. Without telling you an even longer story, my therapist told me that these things he did to me was probably a big reason why i couldnt help losing the girl i lost that i recently found out died. You need to show this friend how much you really care about them along with a lot of understanding what they have lived through. I dont know what all they have been through, but i also lived through verbal abuse from my father by him calling me a pu**y, telling me , when i messed something up, that i would f*ck up a wet dream. Sometimes when he disciplined us, he would grab our necks and hit our head against the wall. I remember when i was about 5, my mom crying one time when her and my dad were in their bedroom and i ran to the door to see if she was ok, she said she was, but when i saw her, she had a black eye. My dad played a part in breaking me up with that girl i loved. He , also didnt allow me to go to baseball all star games after my 10th and 11th grade years. I was one of 2 players from my team picked to go. When my coach told me i was chosen, he pulled me aside, and told me that there would be college and pro scouts there. He took a lot of things away from me. Im sorry to be rambling, but if there is anyway to help you and your friend in any way, let me know. I know how badly they must feel and i admire you for supporting them. I will say a prayer for you both.
