I don't what to do anymore...
I don't know what to do. My family and my friends tell me that I'm smart and pretty but I can't believe them. I recently got inducted into the National Honors Society and yet I can't feel smart. I can't feel smart enough, and I feel so terrible because I worry that I'm not good enough to get into the college I want to go to. I'm not good enough to have the friends I want. I'm not good enough to have a boy like me back. I'm just not good enough. Dealing with this and anxiety has just crippled me, to the point where I just want to give up and not do anything. I just want to let the world pass me by, because it's too hard for me to keep up. I'm just so tired of not being good enough.
@brieflybri9, I know how tough it can be to worry about getting into college and feeling smart enough. You got accepted into the honor society, so you must be smart! Not everyone makes it into honor society. You will end up in the college you are meant to go to. What is meant for you shall not pass you. Don't stress too much about how smart you are suppose to be, you will get into a good school. You will also make friends and have a good time. Try to relax or take a walk, workout or even meditate a little bit everyday, it might help to take your mind off things. Once again, what is meant for you shall not pass you. What will be, will be.
As a postgraduate in chemistry, if I have learned anything it's that your ambitioncan take you farther than your IQ. The only thing holding you back is you. Take all of that negative energy and focus it towardsone goal at a time, then another, then another. Before you know it you will have to make a new list of goals to complete.
Bri, I hope you don't simply let the world pass you by, because it sounds like you are brilliant and beautiful but just can't let yourself shine. I hope you're getting the help you need with that. You have supportive friends and family who actually tell you about your good qualities - but your inner critic shouts lies over those words. You fret that you won't get into the college you want, won't have the friends you want, but don't say you won't get into college or don't have friends - to me, that's a sign that the truth of your worth is too strong to be overcome completely by the negative thoughts. As a former boy (far too old for the title now) I can guarantee that there are many boys out there who would like you back - if you haven't yet experienced that it could be for so many reasons. There are lots of boys out there, but how many of them have had the privilege of really getting to know you?
A big question to ask yourself is that you repeatedly talk about what you get in life being not "good enough." My strong suspicion is that even if you get into your top college and hang out with the people you identify as the friends you want, that would not feel like it was "good enough" in your heart. I graduated at the top of my high school class but didn't get into my top-choice college, I teach physics at a respected university but not "the best" university, I am married with kids even though I had no friends at all in high school, never dated - has my life been "good enough?" Good enough for what? I can pick at every aspect of my life and argue it's no good. It's a serious problem for me, it's my depression. You'll never achieve your way out of these self-critical thoughts; rather, you must work to accept and love the precious life you've been given. And I do mean work - it is rarely easy to do this. Just know you are derserving, and the effort really is worth it in the end. And it matters more than your grade on your next test, the name of the school on your college diploma, or the social status of your friends.
The good news is that you're here talking to us. That means you know you need help, you know you need to overcome these feelings, and that (even if you don't yet fully believe it) these feelings are indeed just feelings, not facts. You can do this!
