I'm allowed to be selfish sometimes.

May 23rd, 2015

A friend of mine who also struggles with depression said something to me today that hit me hard.

I've been struggling with depression due to recent diagnosis of a Dysautonomic illnessand the loss of myindependenceas a 22 year old woman. I'd been feeling like a burden to my parents having to take care of me, or generally the people around me if I have an fainting episodein public.

My friend said to me "find your happiness regardless if it's selfish, because in order for you to be a great person, you have to love yourself enough to let yourself be happy"

It hit me like a train.I'm allowed to be happy even if that means I have to rely on others to keep me healthy. Even if I can't be asindependentas I wanted that's ok. I can still learn to love myself this way too.

I've probably not explained this well, but I definitely have a new feeling of hope today.

I feel very strongly about this. Sometimes in order to be a happy person, you need to be a little selfish. If you aren't good to yourself, it's difficult to be good to others. Takingcare of yourself first, it's just necessary sometimes.

I absolutely love this. Being "selfish" is something that hasalways been very hard for me - but it is so important to focus on what makes you better, and sometimes it means that your top priority needs to be you.

I'm sending you a warm big hug dear @Lex1234heart

This is absolutely very vital. I'm so glad you realised it.You seem like a very selfless and amazing person, please never stop being you and thank you for sharing your words with us.heart

Being less ?selfless? does not necessarily mean we are being ?selfish?. We are just putting ourselves first for once, and that is not a bad thing at all.
All of us deserve to take care of our own needs. All of us deserve a bit of time to ourselves. Each of us has their own personality, their own values, their own interests; we have a right to acknowledge that they exist.
When we give ourselves the opportunity to be ?selfish?, we are giving ourselves the opportunity to be happier. And this happiness will benefit not only us, but others around us as well.

So don?t be afraid to think about yourself for once. Let yourself be ?selfish? sometimes.
