You've already taken a big positive step by posting this. There's a difference between depression and just being sad, but you don't have to make your symptoms less just because they aren't as bad as what other people experience. Being sad still sucks. Crying still sucks.
So when I'm sad and frustrated and crying I like to do a couple of different things. I call or email a friend. I go outside and sit in the sun for a little while because Vitamin D is supposed to be good for your mood. Sometimes if I want to be creative I'll write a story. If I don't want to be creative I just write a journal entry. Sometimes getting the feelings and worries out on paper makes me feel better.
I hope these suggestions are helpful!

it never starts "bad"...but if you let it, it will go bad..."like the others"...like you said...
So if you don't want to be like us "others", take the opportunity that you identified the first symtoms...now you have to go in introspection, indude yourself and retrospection, in the past to identify what triggered your you incipient depression.
Without any shame, contact your friends again and talk to them and ask their opinion, get counselling and if necessary medication and therapy...talk to people...
I have major depression since 8 years ago, others on this site for 26...believe me, you do not want to be one of us "others" which have "bad" depression...
So act now and act swiftly in all the ways you can to get out. Otherwise, from this point it will only get worse and you will become one of the "others" like us...
Please take care and I wish you well and I hope from my heart tgat yours is just a temporary mood and not a new victim of depression...
Get well soon...
