I’ve had depression for over a decade and it just gets worse and worse. I’m currently unemployed with no health insurance and can’t afford therapy or medication. What do I do

Be mindful of thought and action, start exercising regularly. Where there is no circulation it will be harder to move. This includes the brain, when there is no circulation in the body the brain will be included. When the brain lacks blood circulation it will not functioning efficiently. This is why one finds difficulty in thinking and moving.

@lizb247 Hi. I found this book that allows you to be your own therapist so to speak, and it is about dealing with depression without medication. Dr. David Burns, Feeling Good. He has a newer book called Feeling Great. It is supposed to have more tools than the original, but the organization of the book was terrible and I thought anyone seeing it for the first time would just get overwhelmed. Perhaps the publisher is responsible for that because Dr Burns is really great at presenting information and making it easy to understand and use. Here is a 20 minute TED talk by Dr Burns and it is a really good introduction to his work and how his book might help you. https://youtu.be/H1T5uMeYv9Q

Are there other things that help with depression that you can do on your own? Yes, by way of baby steps. Do something every day that makes your environment nice, like making the bed. And notice if it subtly has an effect on your mood. Gratitude. Mindfulness meditation. Exercise and eating well. Connection with others if possible. Volunteering (an easy volunteer activity might be to become a listener here on 7 Cups). All of those, plus Dr. Burns book helped me. I can still get depressed, but there is a huge difference after reading his book, I usually short circuit the depressive thoughts before they get really bad. Life is a bit more difficult than when I originally got relief from his book, so sometimes I’m not always in a great place lately. So for me it has not been a finished task, but his book, plus ideas from mindfulness meditation have been kind of foundational.

I would probably start by being on here more. You can come onto this post daily and just tell us how you are doing. Someone will respond. It is helpful to have a spot for a brain dump with people who know what you are going through.

Then do try to get out to exercise. It can really turn things around. @lizb247
