Entry 1: The Boxes of Cats

It was a little strange but what I remember most is visiting a house that was in my old neighborhood that I’d recently moved from (it really wasn’t, so dream logic) but I came back to collect something I left or my mother left.

It was very sad and the people who were there now were sort of okay with me wandering around and looking. I kept noticing the signs that I’d once lived there (painted over places that still revealed chipped paint and stuff I recognized from my apartment).

Then I looked beneath a couch or table and found boxes full of kittens. Two boxes were full of meowing kittens in water that the new home owners had no idea were there, and one more box held a very dead cat that was an older one from a previous litter. All of the kittens were starving without their mother and I knew that it was the reason why the older one passed.

The new owners suddenly smelled the dead cat and I took it upon myself to get rid of it. When I came back an hour later all of the kittens were gone, and when I was walking past another house I could see all the kittens. They’d all grown up into adult cats!

I can totally understand the fear part of things. You are feeling a little relief and don't want any of the pain to come back. It's a little like a depressive episode when you start feeling a little better and then wonder when it is going to come back again.

I try to focus on the good I am having now as much as I can. You were strong and brave and got some relief because you were honest and pushed hard. So that is a victory. That is where you need to focus yourself. You are going to find a way through this. The key is not to examine every little flash of pain and presume it will just worsen. It could always go the reverse direction and get better. The PT could cause it to improve afterwards as the shoulder and arm strengthen themselves again. They could also give you better positions to manage the pain better.

This is going to be a one day at a time kind of thing for a bit. But you are finding moments that aren't as painful and you will find more of them. Try to focus on that. Keep breathing and resting. I am here to cheer you on.

Thinking of you and hoping that you are having some less painful moments. Whatever happens next you are going to be able to handle it. Lots of deep breathing and resting.

I’m resting a lot and doing the physical therapy exercises and icing.

my mom has been having a lot of trouble with her food stamps so I’ve been acting like tech support over the phone to help solve the problems, and then got my older sister involved to get her some food.

My pain is more tolerable, thankfully.

It is so good to hear that things are at least a little better. Healing is going to take a while but you are headed in a good direction. Keep it up with the rest and PT exercises.

It is also good that your sister is helping your mom a bit. Take anything off your plate that you can.

One step at a time. Every good hour that you get is important. @integrityblues

Yeah, it’s getting easier to handle the pain itself as the inflammation is being treated.

I can do very little compared to what I used to take on. I’m currently waiting to see if I’m going to get my travel funds at all, but also planning on what my monthly email to my counselor is going to include. If the check doesn’t come by the end of the month I’ll include it not arriving in my email. I know that once there was a problem with that based on funding, and then another time they’d sent it to the wrong person.

I’m still waiting to I hear back from pt so we can schedule the physical therapy that will help my infraspinatus tendon heal. It’s a fairly small tear but I need the use of my arm and the ability to lift more for just me to do everyday things and work, less about taking back my position as the porter. I’ll have to decide if I can take that job back for real since I’m keen on doing an actual lifestyle change to not have to experience this pain ever again.

My mom was able to get her EBT card reissued and a new PIN number too when she went back to the office, so she’s going to be able to buy herself some food and get some food for my younger sister’s dog as he’s still visiting. I’m going to have my next call with her on July 1st.

If I’m feeling okay I’ll go to gamers group tomorrow.

I went to gamers group today. It was okay except for one of the people there explaining that as a former physical therapist she knew that my shoulder was likely never going to be the same even after therapy and another kept pressing me about why I don’t have a pet if I’m so depressed? To be clear, I’d mentioned that my Dr thought it would be a good idea but they don’t consider things like living situations or cost when they suggest that.

The guy said when he got one he’d felt so much better. I just didn’t have the words to explain how the fact that I’m in no way financially capable of taking on a pet, even if it was as small as a mouse or hamster, fills me with anxiety. In a perfect world I’d prefer a cat but I’d also obsess over how it could die or could cost me so much money in care. It’s hard enough to take care of myself most days.

I said I was being responsible by not getting one and he said that all I’d need to do is be responsible and love it. That my face lit up while I was talking about my late friend’s dog…ugh he changed the subject and spoke to someone else for a bit.

If I ignore those two experiences my day there was okay.

I’d bought a Coke Zero at the gas station and brought it with me, and when another member mentioned that he’d not had the money for one I offered to share it with him if he got a mug.

I also played two games of UNO. The first was classic, the second was showdown.

I got home and ate food. I finished listening to an audiobook, then rested. I got a text back from my friend and she confirmed that she’s finally home today- that it’s her fiancés birthday and that his mother just had eye surgery. She had to help care for the mother as well as seeing to her own aches and pains from all that travel.

I said a Mi Sheberach for the mother, then five for my friend, and finally one for myself when she reminded me to think of myself too.

I’m going to come back to gamers group next Thursday because they were talking about serving hot dogs since the 4th of July would be on Friday. The guy who pressed me on the pet stuff mentioned that Mondays might be the start of a baking group there too, and if I was interested I could come to that too.

I am so glad that you got back to the gamer's group! Good job. Every step forward with your shoulder is important.

You really can't compare your experience with your shoulder with anyone else. They don't have your shoulder. So when they say "it will never heal" or "never be the same" they literally have no idea.

You are also right about the pet. Go with your gut. Cats are wonderful, but do cost money. I can attest to this. We just took one of our two to the vet for an annual checkup today. It was a horrible experience. She pooped and peed all over me because she was so upset getting into the carrier. It took three of us to get her there. It also cost $325. But she was fine and we won't have to do that again for probably 3 years.

One way to get the "pet" experience is to do what you are doing and watch out for strays. But you could also consider volunteering at a pet shelter. They would probably love someone to come in an hour a week or so and just play with the cats. I bet that you would really like that and you could keep your contact limited.

I am glad that you think you might go back next week to the game group to celebrate a little of July 4 early. I also love the idea of some kind of cooking group if you were up to it.

Lots of little steps and you are doing them.

I know, it’s just so hard when it’s people who are nice and sound like they want to be friendly but then hammer their opinions home and sort of ignore mine.

Like, yeah I have some deep seeded issues about pets not being taken care of at all in my childhood or later on when I lived with friends some were just being adopted and kept till someone grew tired of them and took them back to the shelter or pawned them off on someone else. The lack of responsibility, the cost, and the fact that it takes more than love to keep a pet was a hard lesson.

I’m very glad that you took one of your cats to the vet! I know that not all pets handle the stress of it well but you’re the owner so you make the decisions for their benefit, kind of like you’d do when taking your kids to the dr.

Sadly many of the community cats are gone. The friendly one that had kept trying to get into my apartment was picked up by someone else on the block, so the dude has what he’s wanted for awhile now. I hope he’s being the best for the lady who rescued him.

Many of the other community cats have been removed from the area by the people who do Trap Neuter Returns, but they’ve also decided to not return the cats to where they were originally found. It took forever but the cat that had been hunting the mice near our garbage cans finally returned for one night to greet the neighbor who was feeding him, then I think the cat just moved on to find a nice spot to hunt again.

I’m going to have to consider volunteering. I do like the idea of being around cats and maybe they’ll offer something like that- the last time I checked with my city the only positions were for cleaning and I don’t think I have that ability with my bad shoulder.

Maybe I’ll get myself a plant that’s easy to care for. I know I’ve mentioned it in the past and said “oh no, maybe I’ll just turn it into an effort to care for myself. Like I’m the plant that needs sunshine and water and healthy things”.

I’m considering the Monday baking group but first I’ll do the next gamers group and ask when the next baking group is set for because I don’t know the hours. I’d also ask what kind of equipment they have like stoves or other stuff, because then it would change what I’d be bringing with me ingredient wise. If so had to choose what I’d bake, I’d choose something easy but a winner- either jam thumbprint cookies or hand rolled snickerdoodles.

I don’t know what the next week is going to look like- one of my aunts is going on vacation and she’s been eager to visit me for months but between her health issues and mine it hasn’t been possible. She said she’d tell me when because she’s going to try and get my two cousins to come along too so we can get breakfast.

I’m going to very slowly do a load of laundry tomorrow morning so I’m sure that I have clean clothes to wear.

I can really feel that shoulder starting to improve a little with how the pain isn't the only focus of your message. It is good that you are taking it nice and easy with it. Be careful when you get in touch with your mom on July 1 that you don't overdo it.

There might be more than just the city shelter where you can volunteer with cats a little. Sometimes there are private shelters as well. Anywhere would be good. I can't imagine any shelter looking down on someone coming in to socialize with the cats. Animals really need that. We have two cats and would never consider taking them back to the shelter though neither is particularly friendly. They aren't lap kitties at all, but they are funny. One will sit just out of reach and roll over. She likes to be told she is pretty. The other will hiss and growl but she will occasionally take about 5 minutes of petting, but if you stop during that 5 minute window she bites you. She is also a bit of a klutz. They are both only indoors.

An indoor plant sounds nice. Something really simple. I am most definitely not a gardener, but we have begun a small garden in the back of our house and I haven't killed anything yet. Going out in the morning to weed for a few minutes has been nice in terms of de-stressing. But it is very hot.

I love the idea of one of your aunts visiting. That should be lovely to get a chance to see people. It is also great to continue with the gamers group and maybe getting a chance to do a little baking. I always love to bake for other people and you might learn some great simple recipes as well. @integrityblues

I dreamt that I was visiting with my mom and younger sister. I’d gone to the kitchen that became mine the second I stepped in (dream logic) except that the faucet for the sink was actually a shower head.

As I looked at the shower head a maggot wriggled out of it, fell on my dirty dishes, and then became a house fly. I was disgusted to find that tiny gnats were coming out of the base of the shower head so I pulled it off the wall to clean it. When the water began to trickle from the pipe in the wall so I shoved it back in place.

I ended up leaving the house and going to my old community college. When I got there I was immediately struck by a guy and two other girls came to my defense. I came to help them and began hitting the guy with my cane before the police came and separated all of us for questioning.

Nothing really happened, but to check and see the status of my case I had to press buttons on an atm machine that was for some reason acting like a computer. All it would say is that the case had been filed.

I woke up too early and a bit sore. Once I was up for real I took my meds and then listened to meditation tracks while I did my physical therapy exercises.

After it was over I put on my shoulder ice pack and laid down again.

Oh yeah, that one was weird. It’s probably an anxiety dream related to me keeping my home clean and needing to call in the repair for my sink faucet. The attack is more anxiety or just fear about not being able to protect myself since I’ve been hurt for so long.

I’ve been trying to do my pt exercises more often to keep the muscles warm and flexible, and I’ve added pedaling for 30 minutes while I watch TV so I can get more cardio in. I’m even folding the futon into a couch more often so I can sit up with pillows behind my back and read rather than just lay there.

Today would have been the start of Camp NaNoWriMo, July if National Novel Writing Month were still alive so I made sure to put some effort into getting some writing done for pleasure. I’d intended to do it in March as well but I’d been too hurt.

I set up the couch and used the pillows to stay upright and have typed 438 words out of 1,613, my daily goal if I want to hit 50,000 by the end of the month. I’ve taken several breaks, iced my shoulder and did my exercises, but also took the time to do an actual chore today.

I did a good amount of dishes because I was far too tired the day before when I did way too much laundry and suffered the consequences. Granted, I rested a lot after it was over, took a muscle relaxer, and used the lidocaine. I’d stayed up and watched Squid Game Season 3.

I’m doing the dishes so I can try and bake the pistachio ricotta coffee cake so I can bring it to gamers group on Thursday.

My call with my mom was like four little calls because she was very tired. Her check came in, her autopay for her rent went through as planned while also leaving her a decent amount of money to buy what she needed today.

She’d called me again to say that her pin hadn’t worked the second time she left to go to the atm and after I checked her account it said she needed to change her pin. She did it and was fine.

We spoke again later to just finish the call. She’s going to focus on resting like I am.

I made the pistachio ricotta coffee cake and brought one loaf to the gamers group (I wrapped the other one in press and seal and froze it for my best friend and her fiance to share).

They liked it a lot, and I confirmed with one of the people there that the baking group will be on Monday from 1-3.

I’m going to go to the baking group. It’s called Bake It Till You Make It. Adorable. They mentioned that the they’ll be making boxed banana pudding and I’ll be there to help them make jam thumbprint shortbread cookies.

I had to talk my mom out of a spiraling panic because she’d accidentally taken someone’s laundry at the laundromat and worked herself up into a fit as she had thought they were going to beat her up. She did say that the lady wasn’t mad at her but was happy she tried to give them back and admit the mistake was made.

This whole experience has made my mom consider more than ever that she needs to find an assisted living facility. Her worker is going to try and talk with her about it.

Both of your messages contain so much good compared to a few weeks ago. You are taking it good and slow with the shoulder and are seeing some improvements! Exercise is fantastic! And you are writing again!

I love the idea of the baker's group. That sounds like fun and a great outlet for your creativity.

All of your stuff sounds so much better than my week. I can use the good news. Yesterday I went back to the eye doctor because I was having trouble seeing out of my brand new glasses. It turns out that in the month since I had the original eye appointment that a macular hole has opened up in the back of my eye that must be corrected within 6 months if I want to keep vision in the eye. So I am having emergency eye surgery on July 22nd. Afterwards I will have to spend three days upside down without moving day or night in something like a massage chair with my face pointed towards the floor. I am not really clear how I am going to handle it all with my anxiety but I guess I have no choice but to try. @integrityblues

Oh no! I’m so sorry about the macular hole- I think the good news is that there’s a high success rate. I imagine you’d have to be on a massage table, you know, so there’s a space for your face to be as you look directly at the ground? I’d hope they’d let you do the mandatory three days while at the hospital so people could see to your needs and also provide stuff to entertain you. Like a flatscreen on the ground so you could catch up on your Netflix!

Anxiety is trouble, but with a bit of time on your side you can refine your coping mechanisms for before and after the surgery.

You’ve got this! I’d say stockpile your favorite movies, music, and audiobooks so you’ll have plenty to occupy your time while healing.

Thanks for the support. It is an outpatient procedure actually so I will most definitely be at home for the 3 days. We have to rent a special chair that can then be taken apart for the bed so I can supposedly sleep on it. Luckily my husband is offering tons of support so we will try to find ways to keep me occupied. I really don't have a choice but to just try to do it. But my anxiety and depression (that one I have escaped for a while) are definitely going full tilt at the moment.

Anyway, I hope that you are having a good day and that your shoulder continues to heal. @integrityblues

I’m sure that with your husband’s help you’ll get through those 3 days. Once the surgery is over and you’re home for recovery all you’ll have to do is entertain yourself or keep your mind off of the worries.

I made peanut butter bread for my aunt that is visiting tomorrow. I also made my shoulder hurt more after cleaning my apartment. I did dishes, swept the kitchen, and vacuumed my floors. I’m leaving my bathroom for last. I’ll do it tomorrow morning.

My other aunt should call tomorrow morning so we can discuss how my electric bill will be paid before it’s due on the 9th.

I’m going to try and rest now.

I woke up with an aching shoulder then fell back asleep wearing my shoulder ice pack. I got up again with my alarm and then took meds and had a hot shower.

I did my physical therapy while I listened to a guided meditation on gratitude and another about mindfulness. I also made sure to finish cleaning my bathroom so they could use it. No one had to so it’s a win either way- that I was prepared and that it’s clean anyway.

Both of my aunts came to breakfast, one brought her girls, and we had a nice time! They drove me home, and the aunt who said she’d help with my electric bill said we’d talk later about it.

We did talk about it and after we tried a few different ways she ended up logging into my account to save her payment information. She logged out and I logged back in so I could put the payment through. I asked for ground rules about when to pay the bill because I don’t want to mess with her own bill paying, so I made myself a big note warning myself that she’d be paying but that I’d have to text her before making the payment.

After that I called my mom while I was filling my med kit for this week. I told her how everyone is doing and mentioned that one aunt said she’d be willing to give her a hand if she was interested in IHHS. That she’d be okay with light cleaning and helping her out like I would. My mom was touched and is considering it for now.

I’m now resting in a pretty clean apartment. It’s cleaner than it’s been in 7 months!

I’m going to get plenty of rest tonight and tomorrow morning as I prepare for the baking group in the afternoon. I’m going to see how well I hold up.

User Profile: integrityblues
integrityblues OP July 8th, 2025

I went to the baking group even though I was extremely tired. I was so tired that I slept in after taking my meds to catch up on my sleep and feel better.

We made a pretty good banana pudding with vanilla pudding mix, crushed Nilla wafers, and sliced bananas. Next week we’ll do peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies!

I did some of my physical therapy shoulder stretches and when I explained what I was doing they started following along. They were talking about movie day tomorrow and one of the guys in the group offered to pay for me to come along, but I politely declined. I already knew that I was going to be so tired tomorrow.

My shoulder was aching enough for me to put on the sling to take the pressure off of it and immobilize it for a bit. I’m waiting for my shoulder gel back to freeze.

I’ll sleep in tomorrow morning too.

I’m a little more at ease because one aunt helped me pay the electric bill yesterday and the other told me that at the end of the month she’d Zelle me some money to put towards my rent. I thanked her and made sure to give her the email address attached to my Zelle.

Oh! And the aunt who got the bread just tried it and she really liked it!

What a beautiful few days for you! I am glad that you are surviving with the shoulder. The exercises do seem to be helping.

What I really loved to hear about was your people contacts though. I know your aunts aren't perfect but it sounds like your visit was lovely and they were quite supportive. You are also starting to make some excellent friends through the baking group, etc. That sounds like it is even a better fit than the gaming group for you (but with some of the same people I am sure). Of course not all your time with others will be as awesome, but the more comfortable you become the better.

Today was my husband's birthday and I survived it okay. Pretty tired tonight though.

Happy birthday to your husband! I hope you both enjoyed a little cake. You’ll get all sorts of rest. I’m sure he had a good birthday too.

There were five people at my bakers group including myself. One was there because she was supposed to be at a budgeting group that was canceled, but stuck around to help with the pudding. The other three were from my gamer’s group.

It was nice to spend some time working on a team to get the pudding ready. I’m so used to baking by myself so it was different, but nice. I had to catch myself several times if I noticed that someone toughed their face as they were working on the pudding. I only washed my hands once to start the dish, and sanitized my hands after I did the physical therapy exercises like wall crawls.

I also think the baking group is a good fit because I already know how to do a lot of it myself, and with a lot of the group games I don’t know understand the rules.

I asked my best friend if we could schedule our call. I’ve waited almost two weeks because I wanted her to get back into her home routine after doing the puppy drive.

She said yes and we agreed that we can talk tomorrow!

I’ll be laying around mostly, of course, so it’ll be pretty nice!

I went to my pt appointment for evaluation. The exam was okay, she assured me that we would begin to slowly strengthen and increase flexibility, and then do isometric exercises to target the muscles rather than the joints.

I’ll be seeing her once a week. I was taught two gentle exercises to add to my stretches and I’ll practice them twice a day until I see her again on Thursday. It’s an early appointment so I’ll have time to make it to the gamers group if I want to.

I’d gotten my mom’s card with a money order inside it yesterday so once I was home and rested I took a walk to the bank to deposit it. After that I ordered through my Target app to get at least a 30 day supply of low dose (220 mg instead of 500 mg) naproxen sodium for like $3.99. Other places had ridiculous prices for the same amount and dosage, so I was very glad I could use some of the money my mom sent for more pain medicine since I’m going to run out of the 600 mg ibuprofen this week.

It took awhile but I finally got in touch with my mom to thank her. She broke her phone, put it back together so now it barely works. She told me that she’s sick with a bad sore throat. That it’s been so hot and she’s so tired, she can only go out at night.

I told her to just try and continue her salt water gargling, but also add tea with honey if she has it, more water, and popsicles if she can get them tomorrow morning while it’s still cool.

I iced my shoulder really well for a bit, and now I’m thinking of doing my stretching and exercises. I’ve got my own elastic band. The red one might be a little too much for me right now (my physical therapist let me practice with the yellow one) and if it causes too many aches and pains I’ll ask for a yellow one next Thursday.

I hope that you’re keeping as cool as possible!

We are away for a few days so it is cooler where we are now which is nice. But it is quite rainy and buggy. We will adapt.

Great job in starting in on the exercises. They are going to be key for you to get you back to where you can use the shoulder better. I have a friend who is doing the same for her shoulder. The sessions are a bit painful, but she is determined to keep doing exactly what PT tells her (neither over doing or not doing enough) so that she can get it healed without surgery. You can do the same.

I hope that your mom is feeling better soon. @integrityblues

The exercises aren’t too bad yet, it’s just harder because I usually struggle to incorporate additional things when I’ve set a schedule. In a couple of days I’ll have a better handle on it. It hurts a little when I overextend so I try to be careful.

My mom decided to not accept in person help from anyone and is being stubborn but still isn’t getting things for herself. So I used my credit card to send her tea, honey, popsicles, and milk when she asked for it and it was delivered from her local grocery store this afternoon. She took it all inside and put it away, swearing she’d call me later.

I was busy typing and finished for today. I called my mom and it went directly to voicemail that she still doesn’t know how to check. I’ll try one more time before I have to start my physical therapy exercises, take my meds, and ice my shoulder.

Sorry that I have been away for a few days. It has been pretty rough for me with lots of little things going wrong, so it has been harder for me to get on here. I apologize. Hopefully after we return tomorrow I will be a little bit better off until the surgery a week from today. I am certainly trying to be as positive as I can.

It sounds like you are as well. I am sorry that your mom is being stubborn. Be sure to save enough money for yourself. I hope that the exercises are progressing. Part of my challenge has been wrenching my knee. It is recovering slowly but I can't do a lot of the physical activity that I had hoped to because of the pain. @integrityblues

It’s okay bestVase. Focus on that knee and do little things while you’re away. Rest, ice, and elevate, but also enjoy books or music. Ooh, and maybe some ibuprofen to reduce inflammation?

I’m dealing with my mother gently. She’s getting a little bit better every day. I happened to wake up with the same sore throat yesterday so I feel her discomfort- the difference was that I had my tea and honey here, and only needed to go out once more for popsicles.

I didn’t spend much on her sore throat supplies. The worst was the cost to get it to her place, but that’s why I put it on the credit card.

I’m still waiting to see if my travel funds have been approved as no services were available last month. So if it doesn’t happen this month as well I’m in a bad spot.

My aunt is going to Zelle me some money to go towards my rent, so depending on the amount I’ll put some towards the credit card so I can avoid an interest fee if the travel funds don’t come in.

I hope that your pain eases and you can enjoy your trip before you have to go home. Please feel better!

We are back home now. The knee is very slowly healing and I am down to ibuprofen about once a day and only using the knee brace outside the house. Now it is time to get ready for the surgery next week. I will be happy when July is over.

I am glad that your mom is just a little better. My mother has been a bit like a 3 year old of late. I hope that you are feeling well yourself and are getting out and about some. @integrityblues

Glad you’re home so you can rest and continue healing your knee! Rest, elevate your knee, and ice for 20 minutes or so for pain and swelling.

I’m sure that you’ll be relieved once the surgery is over and July is all done. Let’s hear it for better stuff in August.

My mom is a little better but I’m confused considering that she mysteriously has no cellphone now? It could have been an accident or she was just fed up with it. Secretly I hope that was able to get in contact with Lively to cancel my sister’s stolen phone and get herself a new one since her own is sort of broken.

I won’t hold my breath.

I’m going to get ready for normal therapy tomorrow and it’ll be nice.

I’m preparing for a trip to the Sports Medicine Dr to get a different kind of shot for the pain from the tear so I can make it through the rest of my physical therapy as things get more intensive.

Please read books and pet your cats!

Thanks. It sounds like things are going pretty well for you.'

My knee is healing well and I am no longer taking any pain meds and only need the brace for longer walks. Just in time too because the chair that I have to be immobilized in for the surgery has arrived and it involves resting on my knee a bit. I can't imagine yet how I am going to sleep at night on my stomach without moving.

But trying to focus on things a day at a time. I have some audiobooks and podcasts since my vision is already blurry and I know it will get worse before it gets better. I will try to get on Monday night but that's the day before surgery. Then it is going to be at least a week, @integrityblues

Don’t worry about logging on for me, I’d prefer it if you focus on your surgery and recovery!

Yes, audiobooks and podcasts are the way to go. Get a nice playlist set up before surgery so all you have to do is hit a button.

Take the rest of the weekend to reduce stress or make things easier around your house- like depending on where you set up that chair you could set up an end table or other surface for your phone, charger, medicines, and water bottle or whatever else you need on hand.

Monday night I’ll post about whatever I helped bake in baking group and wish you good luck, too. Then we’ll get back in touch once you’re all done recovering after a week or more.
