Entry 1: The Boxes of Cats

It was a little strange but what I remember most is visiting a house that was in my old neighborhood that I’d recently moved from (it really wasn’t, so dream logic) but I came back to collect something I left or my mother left.

It was very sad and the people who were there now were sort of okay with me wandering around and looking. I kept noticing the signs that I’d once lived there (painted over places that still revealed chipped paint and stuff I recognized from my apartment).

Then I looked beneath a couch or table and found boxes full of kittens. Two boxes were full of meowing kittens in water that the new home owners had no idea were there, and one more box held a very dead cat that was an older one from a previous litter. All of the kittens were starving without their mother and I knew that it was the reason why the older one passed.

The new owners suddenly smelled the dead cat and I took it upon myself to get rid of it. When I came back an hour later all of the kittens were gone, and when I was walking past another house I could see all the kittens. They’d all grown up into adult cats!

Hi bestVase! I actually got really good news yesterday.

I’ve been approved as my mom’s caregiver! I’m getting back pay all the way from September! I made an appointment with a work incentive counselor who is going to look over my newer stats and see what kind of leeway I’ll have since I do need to keep my benefits. It’ll be a balancing act between jobs and my mom, but I’m sure we can figure it out. That appointment won’t be till the 3rd, so I’m waiting.

I’m seeing my job developer tomorrow so we can discuss what to search for since I’ve not been doing so well on my own. I’ll mention this news to her so I have something to share.

I made the appointment for my in person assessment with Access, too! I’ll do that on Friday.

On Saturday I’ll go to my mom so I can cook and clean, but do it while officially checking in at the start and checking out once I’m done. Once I’m finished I’ll send in the second time sheet for January.

That is awesome! You are moving in a great direction with something that you are quite good at. I could see you eventually doing it with other people if you are allowed to have any extra cash. Sometimes bureaucracy moves very slowly but it does move. @integrityblues

Yes, it’s been very nice to have something workout.

I could get other clients if I request it, but for now l’ll focus on my mom and balance my job hunting. I’ll go to a 24 Hour Fitness job fair since they emailed after I’d applied at the local one.

I’m super tired after going to my in person assessment for Access, but I’m getting my new card in February. I’ve got my fingers crossed that my Access card will still work as I’m waiting for the new one (whenever I tap at a train station it says I’m covered till February) and if not I’ll get a cheap bus card.

I might be getting my travel funds since I went to my job developer but I’m not holding my breath. I’ll send a polite email to my counselor and mention the trip to my developer and the job fair I intend to go to.

It sounds like you are planning well for a variety of contingencies. May you get a little time now to rest your soul. Are you reading any good books or watching any good shows?

I am not in really good shape at the moment but I am praying that time will eventually heal some of the wounds of the last few weeks. @integrityblues

I’m so sorry that things haven’t been great. Please get plenty of rest.

I’ve been able to rest all day after yesterday’s trip to my mom. I heated up a frozen meal for her, made instant coffee, brought her a fresh bar of Dial soap, and got an ice pack for her sore gums. Then I helped her fill out a stack of paperwork!

I gave her plenty of hugs and told her I’d be back next week.

Today when I’d checked her new property management portal it still wasn’t saying anything about her auto pay, so I did a one time payment on her behalf to make sure that she’d be safe. Then I called her up to say that she had like 20 bucks left so she could put money aside for laundry or go get a cup of coffee.

I’m going to try and bake some peanut butter brownies tomorrow but also try and apply for more jobs.

I’ve been enjoying a comic called Heartstopper and watching the adaptation on Netflix.

The new semester has begun so real rest isn't in the cards at the moment. But I am not really exhausted, just really hurt. I am going to talk with my therapist tomorrow. Hopefully that will help with the self harm and crying.

It sounds like you are doing good with your mom. I hope that the job application process goes well. At least you can feel a little steadier and more confident now I hope. @integrityblues

I hope that your visit with the therapist helps.

I went to gamers group yesterday, but missed today’s because I was stuck on a Zoom meeting and a call to Social Security.

My mom had a not great day. She was going on and on about having a slug on a curtain. Then she said it was a hummingbird? She was getting more and more distressed as I talked her through how to get it off the curtain or make it sugar water.

I finally told her that I was going to visit tomorrow to give her a hand. I’ll bring her a coffee, one of the brownies I made, and I’ll give her a nice big hug, and then I’ll look at the hummingbird. I’m not 100 percent sure that it’s there but I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt as well as following Occam’s Razor. A bird getting stuck in her house really is the simplest explanation.

When that’s over I’ll go home and do a face plant on my bed. No bakers group for me because I’ll be wrung out from the trip. I’ll go to the Thursday gamers group instead.

I am sorry. I know how rough it is when then get confused more and then you start to worry about how they are handling things. The same thing happens with my mom too.

But we are both doing the best that we can. I hope that your visit with your mom wasn't overly stressful and you were able to bring her some peace. You both deserve some rest. @integrityblues

I dreamt that while I was taking a shower my younger sister had sent a pizza to my house as a way to get me to open the door. I got dressed and stuck my head out to find it wasn’t night any more, but afternoon and she was there to show me she’d moved out of the homeless apartment to a place that doesn’t exist across the street from me. It’s a nice little house but I was so nervous and anxious because I had no idea how she was paying for it.

Well that dream is pretty easy to interpret in terms of your legitimate anxieties. I hope that today has felt a bit easier and you are feeling better overall.

I am just a little better tonight. We will see how long it lasts. I had to spend an hour and 45 minutes with a lawyer investigator today which was extremely nerve wracking. But I did it and it's done. @integrityblues

If it wasn’t bad enough that my mom has been angry and upset and actively saying no to going to see the Dr about her most painful ailment of arthritis in her feet, she just called me to say that my younger sister and her dog came over after he was bitten on the neck by a large Husky. They’re both acting like it was very serious because they kept mentioning the blood, so I told my mom exactly what she wanted to know: how much money did she have left in her account and where is the nearest vet/clinic/urgent care?

I told her I’d find out and gave her all the information including directions and the place’s number.

Now I’m frustrated because she’s going to go out there with my sister and a hurt dog in the dark. She’s already been behaving strangely and I don’t want her to get hurt trying to help my sister and the dog, even though I feel badly for both my sister and the dog.

Update: nothing was done.

It was close to closing when they got there and they didnt even have enough money for the x-ray or wound care that was suggested maybe by the front desk because I couldn’t get my mom to clarify if the dog was seen by anyone.

On another note, I’m sick.

I’ve been getting symptoms that I’ve been not ignoring but trying to treat at home- now I can’t ignore it and have to hit my urgent care for care for this brand new uti.

I am so sorry for all the frustration. That sounds very stressful. The first key is to get yourself feeling better. Remember that thing about putting your own oxygen mask on first. I know that you are worried about everything else, but it will work itself out after you are feeling better. I hope that the UTI has started to do a bit better with antibiotics. @integrityblues

Yesterday was insane. We made the trip to my younger sister and I looked at the dog. The only thing that looks wrong with him is that he yelps in pain while I was petting his ears. Something hurts at the base of one but when I mentioned that he should go to the nearby vet my sister refused. We had an argument about the stupid tv she dumped at mom’s- turns out she took the antenna not the plug, so there’s no way to know if it even works. She started complaining that what, she wasn’t allowed to have nice things? I had to cut it short, said goodbye with my mom and took her home.

Me and mom stopped at McDonald’s for lunch. Then once we got home we found that there was a massive leak in the bathroom that covered her floor with water and dirt, or maybe poop. We discovered that the plumber who had been working upstairs had sent the snake into my mom’s sink pipes and broke them, then flushed the pipes with soapy water.

It was already really late, so I clocked in for an hour and some change so I’d at least get paid for the time I spent cleaning and shopping for paper towels so she had more than napkins and a gross mop to clean with.

I left not long after because it was already six. A train accident made it so I didn’t get home till after 10:30, so I’m trying to rest today so I can go and help her clean up tomorrow.

I had to take my mom to the er today for her complaint about difficulty breathing and pressure on her chest or throat.

She’s a horrible patient. Once they confirmed that she was experiencing or had experienced a mild heart attack she was just so scared that she started to agree to cooperate until they got her to a ct scan and told her the contrast contains iodine which she’s allergic to if it touches her skin…a nice Dr came to explain that there were steps to be taken to make the scan less harmful (even though the risk was low and my mom was just going on and on trying to find reasons not to do anything).

After she calmed down and agreed to stay the night to do the prep to possibly do a cardio angiogram to see if her calcified veins in her heart or neck have a blockage. I took her keys so I could come back in the morning and get one of the medicines the drs didn’t have, some diapers, and my shoulder wrap that was still in the freezer and just bring her the stuff she needed.

I got messages after I’d been on the bus and train for 30 minutes- my mom was flipping out and saying she wasn’t going to stay. Everyone was panicking and I couldn’t get my mom to answer her cell phone.

I made it clear that it was too late for me to turn back. That I was exhausted with a terrible headache and I’d not even gotten to send my damned IHSS paystub in the mail because of how long this took!

By the time I got home an hour and a half later she’d settled down to stay where she was, no more insisting that she’d get a taxi or break her own window to get back inside the house. The hospital gave her dinner and we’re moving her to a new room. I hope it was in the icu like she was supposed to because she’s on heparin and something else that messes with her blood pressure.

The only benefit was during the ride home a puppy sat next to me on the train and cuddled against my side. His name was Cowboy and he let me pet him.

My mom has continued to be the worst patient. I visited today because I had to get my stuff and deliver stuff to her, but I felt so sick from the stress that I hung out in my mom’s bathroom at home till I felt a bit better and let the pills I took kick in.

She’s continued to argue about her heart attack being a lie. I sat with her for a bit and eventually hit the cafeteria for a lunch for me and a pudding cup for my mom because she was so eager to have sugar.

I’ve been home for a while. She called to say hi and also say that she thought everyone in the icu was lying about her heart attack. I told her I knew it was real because I saw the labs and she hung up on me. She called again a few minutes ago to say she had left the hospital and was catching a cab to go home.

My voice was flat when I just accepted what was happening because I’m tired of fighting her and stressing myself out so much I’m making myself ill.

She should have just not gone with me to the hospital on Friday.

I don’t know how to feel about going back to her now that we’ve had this scare

After a day of not being able to talk to my best friend because she was away, of not getting more help from my sister aside from her mentioning that what’s up with mom is bad and I should get power of attorney to make her decisions, and texting my aunts.

I was hit with such a feeling of anger and self-hatred I finally drew all over my arm to cope with self-harm urges. I didn’t cut or anything, it would just make me feel so much worse…

My mom is going to be so mad when she finds out that I, as a mandated reporter, sent a message to her social worker about her leaving the hospital ama after refusing further treatment for what the tests strongly indicate is a non-stemi. She refused the cat scan and angio gram so they couldn’t figure out what the blockage is or where in her heart it is.

I’ve been an emotional wreck and though I’m not as upset as before it sneaks up on me.

I’m going to go out for some air while the sun is still out. I kind of want something sweet.

Hi bestVase. I hope you’re doing okay and that your dizziness and vision are better. You don’t have to reply if it’s still hard to see the screen.

Today I bought my mom nicotine patches and had them delivered to her house. She’s adamant that she’s going to try and stop smoking because it’s killing her while also not really doing anything about that non Stemi heart attack.

Only just now has she said she’d consider getting the cardio angiogram done, but made it very clear that she’s was frightened and thought they were going to kill her during the procedure. I told her I’d be there with her.

The last few days have been painful because all she’s spoke about is dying or letting herself die. My appointment at therapy was full of me trying to accept that this was probably definitely going to happen.

She finally perked up after seeing my younger sister and the dog- she actually gave away the cell phone to her and has to rely on the house phone to communicate now.

I’m going to see her on Saturday to do her laundry. I’ve told her that she’s not allowed to physically exert herself and that the laundry is for me to do!

I’m so tired but I’m trying to focus on my dentist appointment tomorrow as well as a phone interview on Friday.

I am so, so sorry for having to skip a number of days. Our last week sounds equally dramatic and deeply difficult to process. I was simply too exhausted to get on to do anything in the last few days.

In between my two eye surgeries, my mom was in a serious car accident. She had an epileptic seizure while driving, hit a traffic sign, ran over a traffic circle and slammed into a tree which left the car nearly on its side. But she ended up with no broken bones or bleeding. It was some kind of miracle. But they found blood clots in her lungs and legs as they were examining her. So she ended up in ICU for two days and a regular room for another three days. She got home yesterday. She is now on blood thinners and a new epilepsy medication. They also lost both her glasses and her hearing aids so she can neither see nor hear. We live three hours away and so managing all of her stuff is quite difficult while having surgery and holding down a job. And dad is still in hospice.

I can really understand what you have been going through. I am so sorry that your mom is such a tough patient and wants to give up. That is really tough on you. But you are doing the best that you can. And it is enough. You are enough and you are loved. Sending lots of hugs.

I will do my best to be on here more often. We will visit again my parents again on Saturday.

Thanks bestVase. I’m so sorry about your mom’s accident! That’s really scary.

Good luck to you and your mom.

I’m taking my mom back to the hospital to get those damned tests done. She was already edging towards the idea herself yesterday but I sealed it by telling her that according to her last drs notes while she was in the icu they noticed an acute kidney injury too. And that can be fatal if not treated.

So I’m taking a change of clothes and all my weekend pills so i can stay at her house to be closer to the hospital and hopefully prevent her from running away this time.

I have a job interview on the phone this afternoon at 1 so I’m hoping that she doesn’t flip.

Please get rest for your eyes and let your cats to relieve stress.

I am so glad that you convinced her to go back and get the tests done. I know how scared she must be to react that way, but you are doing what is best for her. Once she realizes that the tests are survivable, it will hopefully be easier on you. Find as much time as you can to rest. You will need it.

We will go and see my mom and dad again tomorrow. I will hopefully finally get a chance to look at all of her discharge instructions, figure out why the therapy people haven't called yet, find the title on her totaled car so it can be turned over to the insurance company, get the insurance company to talk to me by her giving permission, fill out all the paperwork for the neurology appointment on Wednesday, and take mom to see dad for the first time in a week. I think that's it. It is all those details that I know are running your life now too.

But we will get through. We are stronger than we think.@integrityblues

It wasn’t easy but my mom is finally getting the cardio angiogram. It took 4 or 5 hours in the ER again with extra testing but when a doctor came in he laid it out for her- he’s taking her to the cathlab to get the cardio angiogram done. Once he sees what’s up, he will have to decide the route to handle it. If it’s a blockage then he’d likely do a stent and give her strict instructions and medication, if it’s something more damaging, I don’t exactly remember what the plan would be.

We said goodbye and split up. She’d love a sandwich, that poor woman had last eaten at 8 in the morning and could have no food or water as they decided which tests to do. They swore that after the angiogram she’d get to finally eat. I’ll get whatever is soft and tasty.

My head is killing me as I sit in the cafeteria and charge my phone. My mom will get her own room once the procedure is done, and then once I’m sure she’s okay I’ll just go to her house to rest.

I hope that you get everything you need finish for your mom and then take a big rest.

I stayed over at my mom’s last night. I’d taken her to the er and after more tests they’d finally gave her the cardio angiogram and discovered the blockage they suspected. They treated it with a stent and she stayed overnight.

I did all her laundry this morning and once it was all done I went to see her. She was doing pretty well but was so eager to go home that she kept trying to get out of bed and get dressed.

We got her medicines and the ok to go, and then my mom wanted to take charge of the trip home and wanted to take a different route.

It was exhausting and didn’t “take three blocks” off the trip but added seven blocks of walking that wore us both out and added a good hour to the trip home.

We finally got home and my aunt arrived to show us some shirts and pants she’d like to give us. We all had a nice chat, and then she took me home so I wouldn’t have to ride the bus and train for two hours.

I am sure that was quite the exhausting weekend. But it sounds like the stent got placed and that is the most important thing.

Sorry about all the extra laundry, medication and walking.

My Saturday visit was also not easy. Mom was not taking her blood thinning medication properly so now I am calling twice a day to make sure she takes the right amount. Her memory is definitely weaker at least for right now and it also quite hard because she can't see or hear well without the glasses and hearing aids. We did get her out to a restaurant for a quick lunch but that was hard. My dad was in quite a bit of pain with his ankle when we visited and then we went back to mom's where she had a bowel episode everywhere. Today she sounds a little better on the phone. I will go back with my son on Tuesday/Wednesday for a bunch of doctor appointments. It is all very exhausting and I am dealing with lots of panic. @integrityblues

I’m so sorry. Memory problems are tough. I hope the glasses and hearing aids are found.

I spoke to my mom today this morning and we got into a huge argument. She hung up on me and we didn’t talk all day.

I called her several times and when she finally answered I thought things were going to be okay until I asked about her medicine and we began fighting again. The hospital trips, the fact that she absolutely has to take the medicines or she’ll get another heart attack. She once again started saying that she wasn’t going to do it and I couldn’t help but start crying from the stress.

She literally snapped at me to stop, and we had a back and forth over the medicine lists. I finally got her to take the last pill and told her I’d be there tomorrow. I’m going to use a sharpie to label the caps with numbers.
