New pet (guinea pig) really helping struggle with depression
So I've struggled with depression since early middle school, and I'm now 19. Despite trying many things, nothing seems to help. But i am fortunate enough to have periods where I'm a little better. But when i get my bad days, I cannot get out of bed, I catch myself getting bad again and I simply feel so shitty and don't take care of myself to help myself feel better in the little ways that i should. I lose contact with almost everyone because I just get into this clouded fog and my brain just seems to hate me.
BUT LOL the point of this post,.. i recently rescued a guinea pig, after some research and genuine interest in them, i found one who needed a better home and i then got the needed supplies and rearranged my whole room to set up an area for him. (A table for his habitat/cage) and i store his supplies underneath. The fact that i have a pet that is solely mine, and lives in my room, somewhat forces me to get up and take care of something that relies on me. He needs me to take care of him, which in turn makes me more likely to do little things for myself as well. Also just having a little fur baby for playing and snuggling is just amazing.
Guinea pigs are not hard animals to take care of but they do require certain things, and routine always can help when managing depression.
i just wanted to share my experience in how rescuing my little guy has helped me!
