Most people would look at my life and say that I have it pretty good. Not perfect but good. So why am I so depressed?

MrB,

I can definitely relate to how you feel though! Having a 'good' life according to other people doesn't mean you can't be depressed. Depression often isn't something that we can control or turn on/off!

Sometimes, people will compare your life to theirs and tell you not to be sad, unhappy, etc. However, that's not how life works. There is no 'requirement' to being depressed.

There are many listeners on this website so I encourage you to connect with one so you can talk about what you are experiencing!

Oh my god, I can totally relate!! I've been told I'm too young, I have no reason to be sad or suicidal. I'm smart, I should know better... It's so insulting! It's like, do you think I WANT to be like this? Oy, if only they knew...

I understand how you feel. At first glance, most people look at a depressed person and wonder "How can he/she be depressed when they have it pretty good?". I felt the same way when I went through my depression. I didn't understand why I was so unhappy when I had my family, my friends and my health on my side.

It's just a really good example of how depression goes way deeper than what your social orfinancial situation is. You can have everything you want in the world and still be unhappy. :( However, there are many people out there who understand and are willing to listen to you. It's ok to not be ok.

I empathize with how you feel. Depression is buried pretty deep so what seems superficial rarely keys in to the origin of this feeling. It equaly makes depression seem as if it comes from nowhere,Even if you appear "to have everything"

While it is a common thing to make depression "illegitimate" by comparing yourself to the have-nots, it does not justify the why...It's unfortunate.

But it also means that it is criticalto explore the "whats" and "realities" surrounding depression!

Luckily you're here to talk it out with anyone you want.

I've gotten this a million times from different people. Years ago, I was cutting myself and my parents found out. My dad was supportive and asked if I needed to go see a therapist. My mom, on the other hand, got angry with me. She said I had no reason to be upset about anything. Now, occasionally I get people like that on the rare occasionwhere I tell them how I'm feeling. They usually just tell me my life could be way worse and to just get over it.

I understand how it feels. But other people don't really know you. Different situations make people feel different things and sometimes people just can't understand why you feel a certain way based on the circumstances. It's terrible and frustrating. They just don't understand and it hurts when people say things like that. You have reasons behind your depression even if others don't see them.
