Not sure if I have this or not

I know this isn't a doctor's office but I'm curious as from what people might say. I feel like I may have depression but I don't know.

The first time I went to the doctor and told him my symptoms, he said that what I was describing was anhedonia, but not explicitly depression. This is what I feel to this day:

-My brain feels like it's in a fog. Lot's of days, I just feel a blah sensation.

-I've gotten more angry and irritable than I used to. I've also been crying a lot more, including a breakdown I had last week.

-I often had negative thoughts go through my head, such as "I'm not worthy" or "I'm inadequate" or "life is pointless". I've had a couple of suicidal thoughts as well, although I never acted on them.

Again, I really don't know how to describe what I'm feeling. I feel like I've felt this way for a while. I plan on seeing a psychiatrist soon, but I'm just curious as to what the community thinks.

Just to mention: There are many self Tests (quiz type) for evaluation, online. Some are quite involved and provide much feedback

@ChromeLotus Most tests are made for fun and are really not giving a proper answer. I would suggest anybody who wants to know whether they have depression to go read about it here.

@WhiteBearClub

I don't think we're referring to the same Tests. Never saw a depression evaluation Test for Fun? The ones I'm thinking of are by mental health Institutions, medical Foundations, etc

@Nick8876

Any suicidal thoughts whatsoever are a sign of severe depression. I'm guessing there was fear in telling the doctor about it because of fears they'd over react to it and limit your freedoms to choose your next steps. I've been in that position before but thankfully the doctor didn't tell me it wasn't depression specifically. They told me it was more than likely the case and offered me meds right away. I was fearful of meds for a long time until I did research on them to know how they worked and learned they don't change the chemical makeup of your brain but just help it to dispurse what's there more regularly. Eventually I felt it was the only option that would help me get back on my feet and allow me to take joy in my interests again so I went for it and once the side effects subsided (it did need a bit of adjusting doses) I never regretted it since. Not everyone needs them permanently and some people choose to go for talk and CBT therapy only route and have that work for them...in my case I think recovery would have been prolonged too much without the meds.

@CoinFountain

I guess the other thing is that my mood fluctuates constantly. It's not manic, so I don't think I have bipolar disorder. The other thing is that I don't really desire romantic attraction as much as others. I don't know if it's a result of this, because I've had a bit of a problem with online porn in the past, or if that's just a part of who I am.

@Nick8876

I was told by a psychiatrist that mania isn't always super obvious and can be milder than the depression side of it which has made me wonder about my own case a bit but I don't think I have it either. I'm on an SSRI currently which isn't driving my ups over the edge that I can tell.

I get both lower sex drive and lower romantic desire when I'm in a very low depressive state as if I were grieving losing someone that I hadn't even lost...so yeah that can definitely happen as a result of depression.

@Nick8876 the online tests are only indicative. Since you are going to go to the psychiatrist let him do his evaluation and conclude. You just remember we at 7cups are always available for you whenever you need and you are never alone.

@Nick8876 I think it's great that you're willing to share the way you're feeling, and that you're going to see a psychiatrist. We're all here to support you if you ever want to talk about how you're feeling :)
