OCD understanding

Hej everyone,

there is a friend I have, who appears to have OCD.

She told me once, that she was stationary in a hospital for mental health issues one year long. But not what it was.

As she has some hard struggles with decision making at times, depression and almost noone around her who treats her well, I'd appreciate it a lot if someone can help me to understand her better.

Like,

Are there things I should be aware of?

And is it possible, if she wants to say something to me, what she thinks might hurt, talking about an other person but telling me the things she would, hoping I understand it?

Hello Raven
I enjoyed reading your thoughtful question, I like how you care for your friend. It is hard to tell what someone's diagnosis is unless they tell you, symptoms can be similar and don't always match what is going on inside.

What is most important is to be there for her with acceptance and listen as best you can, without trying to change her or tell her her experience is wrong, or judging. Don't say things like 'you should...'. Every person is different and has a different experience and perspective, and whatever she is going through is her valid experience. It can help so much to have people support and love us just as we are, without telling us our thoughts or feelings are wrong.

If you want more understanding of specific issues there are some great guides here: https://www.7cups.com/supportGuides/selfHelpGuides.php

But no one can tell you exactly what your friend wants/needs, except for her. You could ask things like - Are you OK? What can I do to support you? I am here for you. etc. 💛
