I think you should just talk to him in private and be frank with him. Give him the reasons behind the breakup so he isn't left in the dark. Don't assign blame either. The conversation should probably be brief and straight to the point. Also don't promise friendship because you guys will probably need some time to heal before trying to be friends.

If they are happy with you, why breakup with them, no one is perfect, all people have their flaws, and as you do keep up with them, they should do the same, I understand where are you coming from, but trust me, it does not always work like that, if they do love you, they will be happy to support you, they will be happy when they make you smile, talk about it with them, tell them how you feel, they will tell you how you feel about it, and maybe you both can work it out, or find a middle ground
Dont shrink away from people who do love you and care about you, whats the point of having a relationship if we cant feel both our partner sadness and joy
@reliablePond5904 That's a good question. And not knowing much of the situation its hard to give suggestions. One thing about therapist corner is that I can't really give advice because I'm not your therapist and don't have consent which is required. I know that really doesn't help you so I'm sorry! But in general I can say weigh the pros and cons and what you need. We often know what we need/want if we take time to think and listen to ourselves. And remember there are amazing listeners here to help or you can reach out for professional help. I'm sorry this is a hard time for you!
