Scared to lose

Please help me I've dated a guy for 8 months he was in a relationship for 15 years with his kids mom she went to jail that she may have suspend 10 years or more they broke up in 2016 that he have not been in a relationship since then so I have been there for him for 8 months helping him with his kids and doing the things that a woman should do but he's afraid to trust me and I have shown him all the signs allow will not hurt him I had to break it off after Christmas because I need commitment a reassurance he pushes me away because he's afraid what do I do
