The Role of Faith in Depression
I do not go to church. I do not pray or practice religion. I was raised religious, but fell away from it. I turned back towards it during a dark time, but I realized it just wasnt for me. It didnt feel real, and I wanted it to but I'm content without it now. I've placed my faith in myself.
I think depression can make it hard to have faith. Faith in the church, faith in the people around you, the world. Especially hard to find faith in yourself. Why would you be made this way, to suffer? If there is a plan, then it sucks. Or at least that's how I used to feel. I do believe there is something bigger than us out there.
I dont believe in God or that he made me for any reason, which sometimes makes me think "what's the point?" It would be so easy to end something so pointless, and that made me feel small and weak. But as I get better and manage my depression more, I realize that it gives me freedom. Freedom to create my own meaning, and create my own purpose for life and my own plan. I will use it for good. I have faith in myself, and it's all I need.
What are your stories with faith (of all sorts) and depression?
@Fishywishes28 Hello there, I'm sorry to hear that you found no help in having faith in God. Personally, I suffered from depression some time back and it was faith in Jesus that pulled me out of it. I experienced the love of God for me in a way that was so real that no one could ever convince me again that I was not loved. It is what set me totally free to be unashamedly be myself again and walk proudly knowing that I'm loved of the Father not because I am lovely but because He is love :)
