Hi!
As an almost therapist I'm totally shocked that your therapist has said that. It's both not true and not helpful! Personally - if someone is telling their clients that they probably shouldn't be working!
One of the things I've learned along the way is that our brain is essentially plastic. We learn through experiences that are both subconscious and conscious - sometimes we know that we're learning, other times we don't. We know that we're learning when we go to school and learn to walk - but we don't know that we're learning when we watch tv or have conversations.
The same thing happens with our mind. If someone has low self-esteem or thinks that they're useless, they're constantly reinforcing it because they keep believing it and telling themselves that. Likewise, if someone is confident - they are also reinforcing it.
TLDR; your pain is not permanent. No pain ever is. There is always hope of recovery.
