Things that Help Me Through Depression

I'm making this list hoping it would help others.

1. Music

Avoid all your sad playlists (unless that lifts your mood). I usually take my jump around dancing playlists full of rock or pop.

2. Solo dance party

As dorky as this sounds, pair your music with some mindless dancing. I've done this at 3am, and it truly feels like the quiet of the night is dancing with you.

3. Get immersed in a hobby

Reading, painting, football- there are so many things you can choose from. This would help to keep those negative thoughts at bay. At least for a while.

4. Pamper yourself

Candles and a bath or go shopping. My personal favourite is going to that slightly expensive cafe and getting a slice of that cake I've been craving. Or devour a whole pizza while watching my favourite show.

5. Take a bus somewhere

After a long day at uni, my half hour commute back home in the bus calms me. Having the breeze in your face and a blank mind that can do wonders.

6. Take a class

I have a list of new things I want to try- pottery, archery, knitting- and whenever I feel like a sour mood is creeping up on me, I try something from that list. Last time, I learnt the sign language through youtube.

7. List your best

I cannot emphasise how important it is to love yourself. Depression can make you lose sight of what an important and great person you are. Listing your talents and qualities can shine a light.

8. The 6 month plan

Make an outline of what you want to achieve in the next 6 months. Wanna learn the guitar but also finish painting that series? Noting them down and taping that outline to your wall can keep you upbeat about achieving your goals and raise your self worth.

9. Talk to someone

Call up a friend or someone you trust and tell them exactly how you're feeling. No, you aren't bothering them. They've been wanting to find out what happened and really want to help you.

10. Cry it out

No, there is no shame in crying. It's a release and just letting those sad thoughts wash over yourself and crying your heart out can be cathartic. Let it out and you would feel much better after it's done.

11. Hug a friend or family

A long hug is the best. It's so warm and fuzzy and there are no words required to show how much love and happiness a hug can spread.
