Trapped
All I want to do is tell my parents how I feel. How down I am, how worried I am, how lonely I am. They definitely love me but I know they aren't equipped to deal with my mental health issues. I know that they will be concerned and upset, and invasive, but will never actually address the problems or let me see a therapist. I just want to be able to talk to the 2 people who care about me most in this world, but I feel so trapped because I can't. Anyone else dealing with this issue?
Hi
I've been there... And still am, because I got off with wrong foot with my parents. It feels like parents are small children when it comes to dealing with depression with their own children. Maybe that's an helpful thought? When parents get divorce, children are always worried that the divorce is their fault and if they had behaved better, parents wouldn't break up, etc. Maybe if you collected some main thoughts that make you feel depressed and prepared the speech about "it's not your fault, it's just my brain chemistry"? And what about making a list of dos and donts, that would guide your parents through the first shock? After all, most parents are always worried about everything going smoothly with their children and depression is definitely a big "failure" to them... So they need some assurance, that they're not to blame about your situation 😅
