Ways to cope with Depression - A Toolbox

If you're like me, then you'll know first hand how difficult it is to fight depression - thankfully, there are ways you can battle/cope.

However, it is important to note that what works one day may not work another day, so be sure to have as many tips in your toolbox as possible to adapt and handle whatever depression throws in your direction.

So today, I ask you this: what tips are in your Depression Toolbox?

Here are some of mine!

I give myself credit
I know how hard it is to fight depression, so I encourage myself to be proud of any steps and progress I make, even if it takes longer than I had planned.

I always reach out to family and friends
I used to hide depressed feelings from the very people that could actually help me! I feel that talking about what's causing me stress or bringing me down helps lessen the intensity of depressive thoughts. It's therefore important to give those closest to you a chance to help you.

I keep doing things
This is obviously hard at first, really hard. I found this difficult as I didn't have the same amount of energy that I normally did, but part of fighting depression is to simply give your mind to something else. I try to concentrate my attention elsewhere: for me I volunteer (on here) and practice graphic design.

I set small goals
Although I sometimes find the simplest of tasks daunting, I break things down into small tasks, allowing myself to feel achievement, without burning out. Some examples include: getting out of bed, having a shower, getting dressed, eating breakfast, and going for a short walk.

But most importantly...

...I challenge negative thoughts
When I'm about to recognise when depression is pulling me down, I feel I'm about to start my journey towards recovery. Sometimes, all sorts of negative thoughts can get stuck in my head. Therefore, it's important to be able to keep any limiting beliefs in check!

Recovering from depression is a long process, and does indeed take time. But I truly feel that using my Depression Toolbox will help make this journey easier, and full of lessons that will shape me for the better ❤
