Today, after struggling with depression for over 8 years,I decided to tell my parents. A lot has been on my plate these past few months, and I just exploded. My mother and father showed zero sympathy, telling me that i am now wortless and that I should just bring my self up again, than went on to talk about me behind my back thinking that I can't hear them. Culturaly there's a lot of stigma behind mental illness in my homeland. Was it to much to ask them to just listen to me nicely? For once I just want to be human, not an achievement list.

I’m so sorry that happened to you. In no way is this your fault! You were looking for some reassurance and a good support system. I’m sorry they responded and treated like that. I can relate to that in a way.. My parents are aware of my Depression but I don’t open to them because I know they act like the stereotypical “you need help, you’re crazy” type. I had opened up to one of them today and it was what I feared. I was reaching for a hand in comfort and got nothing but criticism and made me realize that they are not my safe space. I’m so sorry your parents made you feel like that. You’re in no way worthless. You are treasured and a wonderful human.

Thank you for giving me support! I appreciate your comment so much☺️. I can relate a lot to searching for a safe space and I'm sorry to hear your parents reacted that way. I know how triggering it can be. Honestly,I was a mix of angry and depressed when I posted this, and your comment helped me. Wish you all the best❤️

I also am dealing with that from my parents. I’m not allowed to cry. If I cry well the last time I went to my mom because people were telling me to k*** myself at school and kept messing with me and it had gone on for weeks on end and I couldn’t take it anymore and she told me to stop crying and yea. I never forgot that. And i still don’t forget that moment. This was years ago. I haven’t actually cried in front of my parents I’d say for about 5 or so years. They want me to go to collage and will try to force me to but I just want to be happy.

Oh i understand this. I was severly bullied in high school, and because of that I still have trust issues. Family was my only safe place to return to when it's hard, but now I see that I need to build a new support system. Baytova I truly hope that all your wishes and dreams for future come true. I know that I'm just some stranger online, but I can understand how exausting it is when parents try to force on you there own unfulfilled dreams. You do you!
