When you are down, forcing yourself to do things can help.
I know this might sound like pressure, but I believe that when we are depressed we need to take action to get out of this depression. Remaining in our safe zone wont help the situation. We all have our ways to deal with depression, but instead of binging with food, video games, movies.. etc.. Trying to achieve things might help us to feel good about the things we have acomplished. Also at the end of the day we can say that we stayed active, and we might get some glimpses of hapiness from doing this.
@talktomeok While this definitely works for some people, it won't work for everyone. Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain, and sometimes just telling someone with depression to "get over it and force themselves to do this and that" is not really helpful. It's much like asking someone who can't walk to get up and walk. It's certainly a good idea to encourage people to do things and strive to be happy, but telling someone who's depressed to just force themselves to put on a happy mask and do things sometimes doesn't achieve anything more than making them more upset. It's not like they want to sit there and be miserable all day, they just don't have the energy to do something else. Depression is used WAY too loosely nowadays, anyway. Being depressed and being sad are two completely different things.
@SkylerBlack77 I talk on expirience on this... I have been depressed all my life. And sitting and just do nothing all day, it just makes things worst... but then again, it works for some people and for others it wont work... you just talk theory.. and you talk like you dont have expirience of what depression is...
@talktomeok I think the feeling of usefulness can sometimes bring you up because you get a purpose even if just for a while.And the more free time you have , the more you get to analyse how things are going wrong. I agree with you , stayng in the safe zone for too long can tempt us to never want to leave it, and this is why we actively have to do things that are a challenge.
@Ylina True, trying to change things around and working on the depression can help by being more active.
@talktomeok
Maybe then is good to remember the things that you always wanted to do but you had no time to do it... Remember the things you dream about when you were a child...now is the moment...
I'm going through a particularly bad bout of depression right now and it is almost impossible to even think about doing something constructive. But yesterday I forced myself to do some household chores. I'm not sure it made me happier - in fact, I'm pretty sure it did not. But at the end of the day I could say that I did SOMETHING, and it feels like a momentous achievement. Sometimes, though, I can actually make myself feel better by forcing myself to get up and do something. Depends on the level of depression, and how motivated I am to feel better.
@Gwendolynne I am in a position similar to you. So I force myself first to do easy things. Forcing myself to prepare some food. or to go for walks, or forcing yourself to do things you enjoy but require work, its something you start building with time. I know how hard is to struggle against depression, but doing a bit every day. For instance, one day you can make a drawing that makes you happy, put little reminders or notes to make you feel better.
