Worried about taking anti depressants
I am diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorder and have been on anti depressants twice before. They weren't very strong medication, but my depression didn't improve when I took them. It seemed to get worse. I stopped taking them and I felt a little better, but after a few months a lot worse. I decided to get on them again with no improvment, so the doctor upped the dose. I started to feel even worse again, so I stopped taking them for a second time. I feel like I might have some sort of mental regret on taking medication for it. Lately my depression and anxiety have been acting up rather badly and I'm unsure of whether or not I should try meds again. I am afraid that they will not work. I'm also worried about side effects, or that I might get addicted or something. I've have also heard that some make you gain weight and restrict the things you can have and I'm worried about that as well. I was wondering about others experiences with medication, and what others would think about whether or not I should get back on meds and what kind.
I was going through the same thing when I was deciding if I should get on antidepressants. But I talked to my therapist about it and she made some good points. You can't get addicted to antidepressants because you don't get a high from them. And for side effects, every medicine you take has some kind of side effects. I've been on antidepressants for a few weeks now and I have some side effects but nothing too bad. Since I've been taking them I have been getting better I still feel sad sometimes and get anxiety attacks but not as often as I use to. I think you should keep trying to find antidepressant that works well for you.
Thank you. I really appreciate your advice. :)
Broken made good points. I find your commitment to getting better wonderful. I have been on one type of anti depressant or another for a very very long time. I'd like to point out that not every medication works for everyone, and that even after finding one that works, at some point doses or medications could still need to be changed. I've found that I can go a few days, maybe a week without my meds before I start to have a very bad reaction. I can tell the difference between the medicated me and the uneducated me. And although the medications don't "fix" me, I feel safer and better on them. I know this is a tough decision, I had all your thoughts before I originally started. Good luck with whatever you choose. It's my opinion that even on meds, therapy is a great idea in tandem with the meds.
