suicide is not selfish
Suicide is a decision made out of desperation, hopelessness, isolation and loneliness. The black hole that is clinical depression is all-consuming. Feeling like a burden to loved ones, feeling like there is no way out, feeling trapped and feeling isolated are all common among people who suffer from depression. People who say that suicide is selfish always reference the survivors. It's selfish to leave children, spouses and other family members behind, so they say. They're not thinking about the survivors, or so they would have us believe. What they don't know is that those very loved ones are the reason many people hang on for just one more day. They do think about the survivors, probably up until the very last moment in many cases. But the soul-crushing depression that envelops them leaves them feeling like there is no alternative. Like the only way to get out is to opt out. And that is a devastating thought to endure. Until you've stared down that level of depression, until you've lost your soul to a sea of emptiness and darkness... you don't get to make those judgments. You might not understand it, and you are certainly entitled to your own feelings, but making those judgments and spreading that kind of negativity won't help the next person. In fact, it will only hurt others.
So incredibly true. Went down that path and now I'm feeling the effects of hurting others. Don't do it
Others don't matter. Its me that matters
I do agree with you, but I just didn't realize that people wanted me to stay. Seeing my mother cry over the thought of me dying really changed my perspective on myself
People always want you to stay. Nobody wants to mourn over a loss.. but at the end of the day..it's a choice that people caused me to have to make. Those same people who are gonna mourn. .
mate, there are millions of reasons to live, but the most convincing one it just for tomorrow. What could tomorrow hold, it could be the best day of your life and everything could go right for you, you never know mate.

I've called didn't help..
If you leave you will never know what it feels like to live-your life may change. There is more to the story than u can see right now. No one can make you change your mind. It's up to you. You aren't selfish you are just afraid of your potential or fail to see it at this moment. Your path isclouded by the dark clouds that block the life and light from shining through. Forgive them for they know not what they say...
I'm not gonna convince you to do anything permanent nor am I gonna tell you not to, but I absolutely agree. It's just a ridiculous human trait that just stems from evolutionarily trying to keep the species alive. People will look at people who have lost their minds and spiralled into in infinite amount of pain, and think they're better off alive and suffering. It's really quite despicable.
I believe the term "Emotionally Dependent Species" comes into play here mate, seeing as WE ALL rely on others emotionally it is not something that is greedy to want someone to live.
If that's not greedy then suicide isn't selfish
I would just like to take a moment to remind everyone if they arein crisis and at immediate riskto visit one of these two websites that offer live chat.

Now, regarding this thread, I see this topic as a very interesting one for discussion, even though it might have been a good idea to put a trigger warning in a title, since it is important to be considerate of others and kind towards others who might feelsensitive and vulnerable.
So, as long as we are talking in abstract terms and discussing suicide from psychological, sociological or philosophical perspectives, as a social phenomenon, I would like to encourage everyone who feels safe enough to share their opinion.
But I also feel the need to express my concern that this thread becomes inappropriate, so let's all keep this a safe place for a debate where people can express their opinion, but if anyone needs immediate help, to ask them to refer to a hotline or proper website, okay?
So, here are some questions for everyone interested:
1. Is suicide out of altruism or fight for social justice selfish?
2. Where does responsibility for preventing suicide lie?
3. Should suicide be considered a crime?
