After my big breakup 8 months in and I’m still finding it hard to be by myself. Feeling lonely even though I have good support. Finding the motivation and focus to do well in my classes and performing well at work. Hard to forgive myself. I am on Wellbutrin now so it gives me more energy, but it’s hard to direct that energy towards my goals.

I'm sorry to hear that. 8 months really isn't that long. It typically takes about 1.5 years to really start to feel like yourself again after a breakup with someone you love. You're likely in a deep state of grief. It's normal to mourn the life you had imagined you would be living right now. The symptoms you've listed are very common with depression. Eventually, you will begin to get over this relationship, but sadly there is no real way to speed up the process. It has to happen in its own time.

I'm happy to hear you have a good support network. That is truly the most vital thing. People often take up new hobbies or take on new responsibilities after a breakup to fill the hole it leaves behind. Personally, after my last breakup, I got some hamsters to take care of. Having other living creatures to care for helped fill the void left behind by my relationship and gave me something other than myself to focus on. I can also highly recommend keeping a journal and doing physical exercise (such as yoga or running).

On the other hand, if the relationship was extremely messy and left you feeling traumatized in some regard; I can only suggest you seek out a professional therapist of some kind. If you're otherwise mentally stable, you just have to be patient. Things will get better eventually. The great thing about emotions is that they're transient. Happiness eventually fades, but as does sadness. Over time we all return to our neutral baseline state.
