How can you teach yourself to trust again?
I can't even count how many broken promises, unread messages and sleepless nights I've had, and I don't want to live like this anymore. I just want to feel OK.
@UnemotionalWreck Hmmm. I can relate to having problems trusting others, so hopefully this will help. :) I began by trusting in myself. I know, that sounds so intuitive and natural, but I seriously didn't even trust myself at one point. Learn the characteristics about you that make you trustworthy to others, like a willingness to help others, maybe, or a faith in humanity. Look for the same attributes that make you trustworthy to other people, in other people. About feeling ok, I would say understand that most people aren't thinking about your best interests, so try not to let their actions mean much to you. Understand that, when those people broke your trust, they weren't thinking about you as their equal. For me, it helped knowing that they just didn't view me as someone worthy of their respect, because that means that I don't have to view them as someone worth my time. ;)
@charmingHemlock8168 wow that's.. that's really eye opening, thank you. I'm sorry you had to go through this too.
@UnemotionalWreck No problem! Haha, I'm just glad that it made sense. This is one of my resolved difficulties, so there's no need to apologize. :)
@charmingHemlock8168 it takes a lot of courage to overcome the things that make you feel weak, so it's really nice to find out that people have managed to do it, gives me hope :)
@UnemotionalWreck You're right; it does! I'm trying to think if there's anything else that helped me out while I was feeling like you are right now. Oh! I let myself question everyone and anyone about everything and anything. Sometimes, when people talk to us, we feel socially obligated to agree with them or just listen to what they're saying without asking too many questions. We don't want to interrupt, we don't want to seem nosy, we don't want them to think of us as skeptical, we want people to like us, etc. I began to change that once I learned that asking questions to understand doesn't show you who's trustworthy, but how they respond to those questions will. Basically, if someone is talking to you, think through what they're saying, politely ask them questions to make sure you understand what they're saying, and pay attention to how they respond to your questions. If they get frustrated, if they act like you're stupid for asking, or if they can't answer certain questions, it's a red flag. Haha, just stay polite!
