Ive been experiencing symptoms of depression since I was 12. Ive talked to many, many trusted people about it, and taken many certified tests online (obviously not to diagnose myself, but to learn), and after all this research, its safe to say I have anxiety and depression. Ive been recommended by 3 different medical professionals over the course of these years for medical help. However, my mom doesnt believe in mental illness. She believes that any mental illness can be cured by a tea and then everythings good. Her compulsive lying and comments have torn me down for years, she is part of the problem. I have tried to get help for my depression at school, and she is practically punishing me for it. Im getting some help at school, but a lot of the therapy programs dont take my insurance. Out of school patient therapy would make us pay money we dont have, and I cant do that. I dont know what to do. Im struggling greatly and the small program at school doesnt do enough. Any chance theres well known programs out here that can help? I live in east Pennsylvania, about an hour from philly.

@Morganmcclain - Hi there. I see you are new here at 7 Cups - Welcome!

I'm not sure how old you are or if you are on any medication. I wonder if it will be possible to go to a doctor (one your insurance will cover) on your own and discuss the possibility of medication. It must really be difficult not having a supportive and understanding family. I'm sorry to hear about that. But I hope that you will find support here at 7 Cups. It looks like you've found the subcommunity for Depression here. There are also self-help guides, chatrooms, free listeners and other things available that might help you. If I can give you a tip about finding a good listener - when you choose one by browsing, make sure you check the verified listener box. Have a look around and find something to best suit your needs and personality. I'm not from the US, so unfortunately I can't help with that specific question. But I hope you will feel welcome here and find some additional support on 7 Cups.

@Morganmcclain - You are welcome. For myself the website is easier to use than the mobile app. But I use both in different circumstances. I also think there is a 3 day free trial for online therapists here on 7 Cups if you want to have a look at that. There might also be other online therapy available, but I guess it's the paying part that will be the problem. Another thing you might consider is getting a good book on depression or whatever you feel you need that you can work through on your own and then discuss with someone here on 7 Cups if you'd like. It's very sad and disappointing when we can't get the support we would like and feel we need. But for myself I then always try to find other ways to help myself until I can get to something better. And you are already doing that by participating in the program at your school. So, good for you. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions navigating the website. I'll do my best to help you find your way around.
