Menstrual Cycle and Depression?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a correlation between your menstrual cycle and depression. Maybe im just making things up in my head, but for the majority of the month I will feel pretty ok mood wise. However the few weeks before my projected period I always feel down. I have struggled with depression in the past, and used to take medication along with therapy.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had experience with this.

@comealongpond1988 Hi there! That's a totally valid concern. I feel that sometimes too. I think it may have to do with the hormonal changes and our background of depression. There's a disorder related to it called PMDD: https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/007193.htm

Of course it's still best to have yourself checked by a doctor before jumping to conclusions. I hope you feel better soon. *sending you a hot water bag and a fluffy blanket*

There is definitely a correlation between your period and depression. I suffer from PMDD and I am working with a doctor to treat it with supplements and natural herbs. Most doctors will prescribe anti-depressants as treatment, but I don't want that. My doctor said there is an imbalance of serotonin in my brain, which regulates mood. It's possible that's what you're going through- leading up to my period I'm more emotional and touchy and out of sync and just awful to deal with. I try not to make any major emotional or life decisions during this time because there's a good chance once my period is over for the month I won't agree with what I have decided.

One of the supplements my doctor has me on is called SAMe Gold. It helps regulate mood health. I have seen it in grocery stores, though I get it through the vitamin shop that's part of my doctor's practice.

Hope this helps you some! It's absolutely awful and I wish there was a cure. PMS is bad enough on its own. sad

@comealongpond1988, I agree with all of the responses already made. My friend seems to be quite similar to what you described, so please know that you're not making things up or anything, and you're far from alonesmiley I really hope everything gets sorted for you, and as already suggested, seeing a doctor may be really helpful, good luck!smiley
