Not sure what’s wrong with me? Depression?

I’m not sure how long it has been going on. I suppose at least 6 months. I’ve been irritable and “smart mouthed” as my mom calls it. Everyone made me mad and I didn’t want to deal with anyone but my boyfriend who makes me happy. I finally got out of this irritable state (although sometimes I still feel irritated by certain people and things) but now I’ve been forgetting things such as forgetting to close the bread bag or forgetting a couple of uncleaned dishes I used for cooking on the counter instead of putting them in the sink or cleaning them right away.

This past weekend I forgot that I had marinated some steaks and closed the lid and left it on the counter (although I believe this was almost an easy mistake. There were other closed containers on the table as well and I was talking to a family member as I closed the container and left it there). Lastly and most recently I forgot to put up a gate to keep my dogs at home contained in their area so they wouldn’t make a mess around the house. I went to work that day and in my rush to get to work I forgot to put the gate up for them. They got out and my mom messaged me “I should smack the shit out of you” ….for leaving the gate down on accident. She also constantly yells at me for my dogs making a mess when I’m not home… as if I can just magically make them NOT make a mess. Anyways, I’m just not sure if I’m depressed and forgetting things and getting irritated or what is wrong with me… any advice would be appreciated. :/

Hi! It sounds like you think there is something wrong with you. Is this all the time, or just at home and with your mother? You mentioned you are happy with your boyfriend. I am wondering why you feel you are the problem, it sounds like your mother is stressed and not being very supportive and accepting of you? This is pretty common in families, we grow up thinking there is something wrong with us, but this belief is implanted in us from how our family treats us and speaks to us. They might not even realise, if that is how they were raised that is what they are used to. Everyone makes mistakes, I am sure your mother does also. Ideally we can love and support each other through our mistakes rather than blame and criticise. We can't expect other people to change, but we can notice those patterns and not let someone else's stress affect our own self-worth. 💛
