What if I don't have depression?

Even though I have all the symptoms of depression, no treatment is working at all. Could it be that that's just my personality? I honestly have no clue how I'm supposed to feel anymore.

Hey! There is a big difference between clinical depression and signs of depression. We all go through moments of depression due to very unpleasant moments in our lives or traumatic events. It's important how long you've been in that state of mind to be able to be diagnosed to be having depression. Usually, if you've been feeling so bad for longer than 3-6 months it may be time to consult a psychiatrist and get help. It's not possible to diagnose yourself correctly.

If you already have done these steps, it might be the moment to change your prescription or your psychiatrist.

You might be in luck as we have a therapists directory here on 7 Cups now. You may be able to connect with one of them and find out a new perspective.

I personally would recommend talking with someone too not just taking meds. Exploring what is going on with someone guidance can help you in getting to the bottom of the problem. But that as well is a trial and error option and you can't click with anyone! It must be very frustrating to go to all sorts of people and get many treatments and nothing to work. What kind of therapists you've worked with so far?

Therapists are of different kinds. I know CBT therapy helps the best with depression, anxiety and phobias. Maybe you asked the wrong questions or they did! It may be possible you are dealing with a bunch of things besides depression and those unless explored will trouble you.

To answer your question, yes, it's possible for symtoms of depression to be caused by your personality. If you have a personality disorder and you've been to a lot of doctors and therapists it seems unusual that none of them have noticed. Even so, it's possible. It could explain why the usual treatments for depression haven't worked for you.

In previous posts you mentioned fibromyalgia, and using video games to escape from life. These things do not make it sound like the usual advice and treatment for depressed people would be very helpful to you.

I can only hope that you'll be able to find some medical professional who understands your situation as a whole, and who understands you as a person the way you really are, with all your troubles and misery.

@RodWhiteley I hope for that too, but it's just not an option right now

@OyashiroSamaThe7th I also struggled with feeling very depressed early in middle school. That was caused by a specific event, but then way after the fact those emotions came back and I became suicidal in college. There are still some things I'm struggling with, and I'm sometimes so frustrate I truly believe nothing could really help, but I'm not suicidal anymore and I realized I have big dreams and goals and want to live and enjoy life for so many reasons. While I haven't gotten it all figured out, finding very good support and people who both listen and are harsh when they need to be has been a huge part of that. Even so, the ONLY thing that really made me start to turn things around was a trip with my campus ministry during which I committed my life to God publically for the first time. I don't know your background or your story, an I don't claim to fully understand, but I will be someone who sticks by you if you need anyone outside of your own circle of friends and family.
