Finding the right therapist

I've been through two therapists, but I just don't feel like they work for me.

I felt like the first one pushed my past and problems under the rug.

I feel like second one is more worried about my family doctor and yearly goals than fixing me.

Any tips for seeking a decent therapist?

@Rebekahwriter13 That sounds like the story of my life. I just tried therapist after therapist until I hit the jackpot with not one but two really excellent doctors. It was so very, very worth it to search. The other thing I learned was to ask questions of the "new" therapist. And, I learned to tell the person I was interviewing (notice change of thought process there (;) what I was looking for and the possible roadblocks I had found in the past. You mentioned that they swept problems under the rug. Oh, so true. That's when I renewed the questioning and interviewing tactics. Good luck. Therapy is the BEST thing I've ever done for me.

@Rebekahwriter13 The therapist and client bond is a special one and its not always the easies to find but keep at it! I would be up front about what you are looking to achieve when you call and have your first visit. And ask how they approach things so you can learn about different therories. There are also some of us who incoroprate several therories and try to "meet clients where they are and what they want" Finally don't be afraid to engage in a conversationa about what is and what is not working. Therapist are not mind readers so we need to know if you want to change something, A good therapist won't get defensive or upset by this but take it as a time to readjust. And if they are defense then its just not a good fit. Good luck!

@AnnaKateMillerLCSW

I felt like a robot to my first one while he passed my past and problems under the rug.

The secone one said my depression and anxiety can never be fixed, and that therapy happens between sessions. I need a therapist that will help me with a problem as I'm having it.
