I’ve always had depression, but now it’s started to switch up. I know have what I believe to be, manic episodes, I feel productive and think I’m going to be fine, then the next day everything crashes harder than before. I get into moods where I don’t want to get up, I feel alone, I feel like nobody wants me around. It’s hard to go to work, sometimes it’s even hard to do something so simple as eating. I’ve struggled and have tried to get help but fail everytime. I’m starting to lose hope into getting better. Has anyone felt this way?

I think you are describing borderline personality disorder. I think you should seek help from a professional.

@dancingApricot3906 You might be thinking of bipolar disorder, mania and depressionbeing the two poles there. Borderlines personaility disorder is a personality disorder where the symptoms and challenges are to be found in interpersonal relationships while bipolar disorder is a mood disorder. It is easy to get the two mixed up due to their similar abbreviations <3

I know exactly how you feel. I feel the same way too. 1 day I will be extra productive, make sure I eat a lot of calories, workout, drink water and vitamins and maybe even socialize and the next day my depression is so bad I don't want to do anything at all. Not even get out of bed to shower. Today is one of those days. I told myself I will do so many things today when I wake up and since waking up I did nothing but stare at my phone. I made breakfast and didn't even finish it because I just don't have an appetite and now I don't have strength to do anything else but my mind is in such a negative space right now I don't know what to do. Like you I don't know what to do. Sometimes it feels like 1 step forward 2 steps back and it's frustrating because I genuinely want to do better.

Hi @Applecrunch124!
It is great that you reach out to us. I know how it feels to experience switching moods. It can make you feel quite lost and unsure of what to do to improve your well-being.

I am no medical professional, but from my knowledge and experience, there possible could be a couple of reasons connected to one of two disorders:
1/ In general depression is a mood disorder with a range of various symptoms. It doesn't necessarily only means feeling sad and lethargic. Sometimes you can have a lot of irritation, even anger, which can manifest as outbursts of energy. Or maybe what you're experiencing right now maybe be a sign of recovery - you are having more and more good days, but the depression is still there. Or maybe your meds stopped working and you have to change them (or change their dosage).

2/ You may be on the bipolar spectrum, which means that you not only have "down" spikes within your moods (like in unipolar depression) but also "up" ones. Those moments of "up" mood manifest in having great energy, being wonderfully productive (in contrast to your usual efficiency), sleeping less, feeling more impulsive and social. But those periods of positive mood are always ending with a depressive episode. You can imagine this as a pendulum - every time you have an up (hypomania/mania), your mood swings inevitably the other way and you experience the crush of depression.

Either way, I would suggest contacting your doctor or medical provider. They would be able to assess your state and change your current treatment (no matter if meds or therapy) to accommodate your symptoms. Contacting a specialist is the safest and even the quickest way to start feeling better.
I would also recommend tracking your own mood. Doing this every day can give you a lot of insight into why are you feeling the way you do and what are your triggers. There are a lot of dedicated apps or Excel spreadsheet - just google "mood tracking". You can also print out a sheet and do it on paper (here is one example).

In my second depressive episode, I experienced a similar mood switching. In my case, after consulting the doctor my diagnosis was changed from depression to bipolar II. And it was quite life-changing because right now I am having a much better relationship with my brain and its moods ^^
It is nothing to be scared of + such situations are fairly common. Lots of people who struggle with depression also have hypomanic episodes, but they simply do not notice the periods of elevated moods. People on the bipolar spectrum are unfortunately often untreated due to misdiagnosis, but they can still live a healthy and rich life ^^

I am here for you if you want to talk. Best wishes,
C.
