Dysthymia is Still Depression

Am i the only one who feels like dysthymia isn't taken seriously? Just because im not clinically depressed doesn't mean im not hurting. All the intrusive thoughts, the attempts are difficult to handle and talk about. I told my friends about it and they were like "isn't that what everybody has?"

I've been feeling this way for 3 years now, and i honestly don't think im getting any better. Sometimes I feel like I'm not miserable enough for my pain to be considered valid.

Hey.

I feel similar. It's a serious condition. MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) and PDD (Persistent Depressive Disorder) may have different ways in which they manifest and they aren't really comparable, in my opinion, both of them are legit recognised conditions. Hence, people might have different support needs, which needs to be acknowledged. It is definitely awful. Your friend normalising it by saying "isn't that what everybody has?" might have been really invalidating, how are you feeling about it? I can relate to people dismissing all the symptoms and the ways things affect me when I am "constantly in this state".

Your struggles are valid. You deserve to be taken seriously and get all the support you need. We're here for you. Let us know how we can best support you. <3

Hello!

I really needed to hear this. Thank you for taking the time to reply to me. Sometimes when people invalidate how I feel, I doubt if my struggles are valid as well. I guess it’s hard when others don’t understand mental health as much.

I hope you’re doing okay:)

@hansenandgretel2

No worries, here for you.

I can only imagine how that'd feel. It can be truly hard to explain it to someone who doesn't understand mental health much, the energy and time among other things that'd take. I see you and your struggles. You're welcome to share more if you'd like to (no pressure). <3

And yes I'm doing okay, thank you.

Tell me about it. Just because I'm not bat shit crazy they totally minimize my suffering. They haven't a clue. This shits the worst. My whole life has been nothing but misery. I completely understand.

Gosh I have never heard anyone call it out for what it is, Dysthymia, no-one ever diagnosed me with this but it sure has been hard to deal with over the years. My ex husband has Bi-polar 1, my daughter has Bi-polar 2, my nephew also has Bi-polar 1, but myself just had depression. Of course they got treatment, I got anti-depressants. I took myself off them years ago. It's still around and rearing it's ugly head as I write but it's OK, it will pass. Good to share, thank-you.
