Medication
Hiya.
Struggling to work the new forum layout, hope this is a suitable place to put this 😮
When I first started with camhs, I had a psychiatrist appointment, but following NICE guidelines, they didn't put me on medication, as I hadn't given talking therapy enough of a try.
8 months later, everything is still the same, and after a few crisis and hospitalisations, they want me to try medication. My care co has spoken to the psychiatrist, and the psychiatrist saw me in hospital, and I have to decide whether 1. I want another appointment 2. I want to try medication.
It will be a common antidepressant, that also helps with anxiety, to try and reduce overwhelm, depression, and dissociation so that I can use DBT skills.
I think medication feels like a failure. I think I am scared if it means I'll be able to access my thoughts. I am worried for side effects. Worried about having false hopes. Worried they'll say no again.
It's all too much.

medication is not failure. you are strong for wanting help. if it helps I only got sweaty from my med and now I don't have any side effects.
Medication isn't a failure. If you had cancer would you take medication to cure yourself? If you had a heart condition, would you take medication to help your heart function better? You are going to take something to help your brain waves. Depression causes the brain to malfunction. That isn't your fault.
You also won't necessarily need medication forever. Finding the right one can take a bit of patience, but it really can help. @CalmCoral

That is very true. It's just disheartening I've tried so many therapies and nothing has helped.
What helps best is combining the therapy with the medication.
It take me a few years to find a good place again, but with the medication and hard therapy work I really did reach a new calm. I am also stronger than when all of the depression stuff started because I know stuff about myself that I didn't before.
I have managed to get off the depression meds entirely and am slowly working my way off of the anxiety ones. The anxiety ones are harder because they help me sleep. Without sleep my mental health is definitely much worse.
You can do this. @CalmCoral
i am on meds and have been for a few months and I was scared at first too. Luckily I have no side effects and they helped make my mood a bit better and control my thoughts more. I would definitely give it a try and if you don’t want to carry on with them you can always talk to your physiatrist about it. Hope all goes well and remember that taking medication isn’t a failure and it’s only temporary. Best wishes x
