@Emily619 I think whatever eating disorder someone has, and whatever weight they are, anyone at any stage of an eating disorder is causing damage, whether they realise, understand or want to take that on board, to their body. I think it has many physical health consequences and if the eating disorder is out of control whether by starvation, overeating, chemical imbalances in the body from purging and so on, the impact physically can be huge. Some of these issues are not seen physically. Someone with an eating disorder cannot see inside their body to see what damage its doing to their heart, their kidneys, their electrolytes and so on. But emotionally and psychologically living and dealing with an eating disorder, can make life a misery for sufferers, increase depression, increase thoughts of self harm deepen someones self loathing, self esteem and self confidence. In addition cognitively if the body is being starved of essential nutrients and is in a malnourished state, this is when too, the cognitions of a sufferer can become impacted.

For me my physical health has really been affected by my ED. It got to the point of my hair falling out and giving me heart problems. The scary thing is that the ED tells you that the physical symptoms are good and that they show you how well you are doing in ED standards. I never realized how sick i had actually gotten until i had to list them all out for a residential program application.
Mental health is also hugely governed by your food intake. However my ED tells me that its just the depression and that i cant control my mental illness. This is an area that i must trust what the doctors and loved ones tell me about the connections between depression and ED. Sometimes you can't trust your feelings and that is something that i am continually struggling with.
