Thoughts, Feeling and Urges

A lot of time we get thoughts, feelings and urges mixed up but they are all different and have different meanings. It's easy when we are struggling to make them all the same and use them interchangeably

So lets look at the meaning of each one:

Urge: An urge is a strong desire or impulse, so examples would be having the urge to purge, binge or self harm

Thought: A thought is An idea or opinion produced by thinking, or occurring suddenly in the mind.

Feeling: A feeling is An emotional state or reaction.

So now that we know what the differences is here is something that I use in a time of need to figure out the difference:

Instead of just saying I am sad you can say I am having the feeling of sadness, that way you not only are labeling that its a feeling but you are also separating the word from you, because you personally aren't that emotion you have feeling that emotion.

Instead of saying my self harm urges are strong, you can say I am noticing the urge to self harm, this way you again are detaching that urge from yourself

Instead of saying saying I am stupid, you can say I am noticing I am have the though, "i am stupid", again this way you are labeling it as a thought and you are separating it from yourself.

@TheAsh

I am loving this thread, Ash!

A lot of people condition those thoughts, urges, and feelings and label them as their own, when we need to realize we aren't those, specifically the negative self-sabotaging thoughts, urges and feelings. It's similar to the phrase "You aren't your eating disorder" .. that's what this reminded me of, so instead of saying "I am anorexic or bulimic" I would say something like "I struggle from anorexia, or bulimia".. what ever the case, it's all about separating those labels from your true self, and realizing that they aren't adjectives.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write it up, it's such an important aspect, even in recovery. ^_^

@MimiBliss Kudos to you too for suggesting that we seperate ourselves from eating disorders. That was very empowering. Both of you made this a great thread heart
