wind turbines

Wind turbines are tall machines with big spinning blades. They are like windmills you might see in a picture, but bigger. Wind turbines take the energy from the wind, and turns it into electricity. This electricity can then be used to power homes and businesses, and help to reduce electricity bills. Wind turbines work by catching the wind in their blades. The blades are shaped like an airplane wing and are designed to capture the most energy from the wind. When the wind blows, the blades spin and turn a shaft inside the turbine. The shaft is connected to a generator, which is a machine that turns the shaft's motion into electricity. The generated electricity is then sent through a power line to a home or a business.

action at a distance

Action at a distance is when something can make something else happen without anything touching each other. It's like magic! But it's not really magic, it's just science. Some examples of action at a distance are gravity and electricity. In the case of gravity, things can attract each other even if they are very far away from each other. In the case of electricity, electricity can move through wires even if there is a long distance between them. This is all possible because of something called fields. Fields are like invisible blankets that wrap around objects and are able to make things move or be attracted to each other over long distances.

binary

Binary is a super special way to count and do math with only two numbers: 0 and 1. It's like playing with legos, but instead of different shapes and colors, we only use two lego pieces, one that looks like nothing (0) and another that looks like a stick (1).

Here's how it works: Imagine you have a line of 10 lego spaces. You can put the nothing (0) or stick (1) in each space. The first space can either have nothing (0) or a stick (1). The second space can also have nothing (0) or a stick (1).

Let's say you want to count to 5 in binary. In regular counting, you would say 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. But in binary, it's a bit different. You would say 0, 1, 10, 11, 100.

Let's break it down. The first space has a 0, so we say 0. The second space has a 1, so we say 1. The third space has a 0, so we say 10. The fourth space has a 1, so we say 11. The fifth space has a 0, so we say 100.

Why is it called binary? Well, the word "bi" means two, and binary uses two numbers, 0 and 1.

Binary is not just for counting, it can also be used to do math. Adding in binary is simple too. Just like normal addition, you add numbers from right to left. But if the sum of two numbers is 2, you carry over to the next space just like carrying over in normal addition.

So, let's add 11 (3 in normal counting) and 10 (2 in normal counting) in binary. We start from the right, which is 1 + 0, which is 1. Then we move to the next space and add 1 + 1, which is 10. But since binary only allows 0 and 1, we have to carry over to the next space. So our final answer is 100, which is 4 in normal counting.

Binary is really important in computers because they use binary to represent everything, like letters, numbers, and even pictures. It's like having a secret code that only uses two symbols to tell the computer what to do.

So remember, binary is a special way to count and do math using only the numbers 0 and 1, kind of like playing with legos with only two kind of lego pieces.

percentile

Imagine a classroom of students with 30 students. If the teacher ranks the students from the tallest to the shortest, everyone would be assigned a number from 1-30. The number that each student got assigned is called a percentile. A percentile is a number that's out of 100 that shows where someone or something ranks when compared to others. So, if you got the 7th tallest out of 30 people, your percentile would be 23, because 7 out of 30 is equal to 23 out of 100 (7/30 = 23/100). That's a percentile!

reinforcement learning

Reinforcement learning is like when you are playing a game and you learn how to play it better over time to get better rewards.

For example, if you have a game where you move a character around by pushing buttons, you start out by just pushing buttons and seeing where it takes you. But if you keep playing, you learn how to make the character move to certain places to get good rewards like coins or points. That's reinforcement learning!

cloud seeding

Cloud seeding is a way of making it rain or snow more. It works by shooting things into the cloud. The things that are shot into the clouds are silver iodide, dry ice, and salt. When those things are shot into the clouds, it makes the clouds colder and wetter. This makes it so the clouds can hold more water, so it rains or snows more.

phases of the moon

Phases of the moon is something that happens every month. When you look up at the sky, you can see the moon, which is a big rocky ball in the sky. Every month, the moon looks a little bit different. That's because of the phases of the moon.

The moon's phases happen because the moon goes around the Earth in an oval-shaped path, and the way the sun's light hits the moon changes as it moves. The moon looks bigger to us when the sun's light is shining on it and smaller when the sun's light isn't shining on it.

The moon has four main phases: new moon, waxing crescent, full moon, and waning crescent.

The new moon is when we can't see the moon in the night sky because the side of the moon that's facing us doesn't have any sunlight on it. As the moon moves in its path, it slowly starts to show a bit of its bright side, looking like a crescent (half circle) shape in the sky. This is called the waxing crescent.

Then the moon moves some more and the whole bright side is lit up by the sun, like a big circle in the sky. This is called the full moon. After the full moon, the moon starts to look like a crescent shape again, but this time it's the other way around - it's the side of the moon that's facing away from us that's lit up by the sun. This is called the waning crescent.

Finally, the moon finishes its journey and goes back to the new moon, and the cycle starts over.

welding vs soldering

Welding and soldering are ways to stick pieces of metal together. Think of it like using glue to stick two pieces of paper together, but instead of glue, we use heat to melt metal and join it together.

Welding uses a big machine that produces a lot of heat to melt the metal pieces together. The melted metal joins and cools to become one solid piece. It's like using a super-hot glue gun.

Soldering uses a smaller tool called a soldering iron, which is like a pen with a heated metal tip. We melt a softer metal called solder onto the joint between the two pieces of metal. When it cools, it solidifies and makes a connection between the two pieces of metal.

Welding is used when two pieces of metal need to become one solid piece, like when building a car or a bridge. Soldering is used when we need to make smaller connections, like creating electronic circuits.

So, welding is like using a big glue gun to make two pieces of metal stick together while soldering is like using a tiny pen with heated glue to make a small connection between two pieces of metal.

Propaganda is when people try to make you think or believe something that might not be true or might not be the whole truth. It can be used to influence people's opinions and actions. For example, if someone wants to sell you something, they might use propaganda to make you more likely to buy it. They might tell you only positive things about it and hide the negative facts.

wave

In the simplest terms, a wave is a repeating pattern of movement. Waves are made of energy and can be seen, heard, or felt. For example, you can see a wave if you toss a pebble into a lake or pond. The pebble creates ripples in the water that spread outwards in circles. You can also hear waves. Concerts or festivals sometimes use speakers to create waves of sound that can be heard by those around them. Lastly, you can feel waves. For example, if someone stands up and starts jumping up and down a wave of energy moves through the floor and you can feel it.
