Fact : Woodpeckers have long tongues that wrap around the back of their skulls and into their nostrils to protect their brains from injury while pecking. When the muscles around the woodpecker's hyoid bone contract, the tongue sticks out and also holds the skull and spine in place. This muscular sling limits the brain's movement inside the skull
