Building a positive relationship with members/guests

Hello there! Erica has posted an informative and fruitful thread for us mods about "mod hate" which you can find here and that led me to think of posting tips and guides in building a strong bond and a healthy relationship with the participants of the room, hoping that it'll alleviate the wall between mods and members/guests. I just wanna add these stuff to Erica's post, like a more detailed key pointer.

If you have just entered the room, read the room. Observe things first like the conversation the members/guests are having. Either try to get along with them if theyre just having casual chats or take necessary measures like giving them warnings or general reminders if theyre misbehaving.

Never ever argue with members/guests in the support rooms or call them out publicly, take it to PMs as much as possible. Try to explain to them in a calm manner the rules and let them, themselves, realize their own mistakes.

If they PMed you about the warning/s or mute/s you've given them, let them explain their side. Do not block them. Clarify things to them and if possible, settle things between the both of you. We don't want them to be more upset.

Never abuse your power and act like you're superior to them. Never ever brag about your role as a mod and show off your badge. We're here to support them, to listen to them, and to understand them.

Be as patient as possible and always try to empathise with them. I have encountered situations wherein there are members who tend to get overwhelmed in group chats and that make them act violently but I also have seen their soft and weaker side. So let's give every human another chance. We commit mistakes and that's understandable. But if things are getting out of hand already and wrongdoings are repeatedly done, that's a different story and that shouldn't be tolerated.

Please always remember that we're LISTENERS here and your role as a mod will be useless if you ever forget where you started. Apply your active listening skills to everyone and don't be biased when supporting people.

If you ever cannot handle the situation anymore, you can always ask for another mod for a back up. Don't mod if you're at your peak of your emotions or if your mind is being irrational.

Mod with an open mind and see things in every perspective. Don't send out warnings in a situation you didn't witness or it's just because you're mad or have personal issues with certain members. Always try to act professionally and try to steer the conversation to make the room less chaotic.

If you can come to the support rooms often, in my personal experience, members/guests become more comfortable with your presence because they find you familiar and interacting with you is easier since they see you visiting the rooms most of the times.

Those are the things that I find helpful in making the support rooms really supportive and friendly. I hope that they will help you too. 🍕🍕🍕 Feel free to comment down additional stuff that you think might be more effective. 😉
