Handling Conflict and Mod Hate in Rooms

One of the responsibilities of a group mod is to handle any conflict that arises in a calm, professional manner by enforcing the rules and keeping the situation from escalating any further. This is often very difficult to do, especially in cases when people are harassing the mod and doing their best to not follow the rules the mod is trying to enforce.

When this happens, I think it's important to remember that you don't have to stay in a room if you find it too difficult or if you don't want to. If you do stay in the room, it's also important to be sure you're handling the situation properly and not being too affected by how you or other mods are being treated; it isn't personal. While each person is different and has their own way of approaching things, there are still some things you shouldn't do.

Being too gentle and not giving warnings
Because conflict will often make the rooms faster and all the messages harder to read, I find that many mods are afraid to actually warn anyone in case their general warnings weren't seen. If you gave a general warning, you can warn those that aren't following the rules, and there's no way to know if they saw your general warning or not, unless they say. Not giving warnings won't help anything because anyone breaking the rules isn't going to see that action will be taken for it.

Being too harsh and warning too much
While its understandable to be frustrated after being and seeing others treated poorly, that doesn't make it okay to be unprofessional and unkind, or to abuse your power by deleting messages that don't break any rules because you're frustrated with that person, or to warn excessively without reminding the room of the rules. Although giving warnings without first giving general warnings is not against the rules, I find that people will be more upset if they weren't first asked to stop, which can create more conflict, or the person might not have known they were breaking any rules.

Tageting members and showing favoritism
Especially when handling conflict, it can be easier to find the respectful member that isn't breaking rules to be more likable than the member consistently breaking rules and being unkind to others, or you might have seen some members previously and could find yourself liking or disliking them based on how you've seen them behave before. No matter what, it's not okay to treat members any differently. Take action when rules are being broken even if you like that person, and don't warn more than usual or necessary if you don't like that person as much or their behavior. Being noticeably nicer to some members and noticeably ruder to others can be upsetting and excluding to those that aren't being treated as well, and upsetting to those that are being punished unfairly. This can make situations worse, particularly when mods are being targeted, as abusing your power and showing favoritism to some members would only give them more to harass you for.

Other situations
There are other situations that might happen that could make things harder, with one of them being users creating multiple accounts. When this happens, it could feel like there's little you can do, with every mute meaning that person will just make a new account. Some things I think are important to remember are to fill out the form for multiple accounts from the chatroom rules to report it, to be sure it's the same person, and to mute immediately for circumventing previous mutes if you're sure it's one person with multiple accounts.
Another situation is when people message you directly to harass you. You don't have to respond to those messages ever, and you don't have to read any messages right away, as that could make modding the room more difficult if you left it for a short time to read messages.

Thank you to @Eccho for helping!
