What Chatroom moderators can and cannot do.
It has come to our attention that still they are some inaccurate beliefs about Chatroom Moderators. The aim of this post is to challenge some of these beliefs by sharing What a Chatroom moderator can and cannot do.
Chatroom Moderators Do -
✔️ Have to take a training in the Moderator role in addition to room topic specific training
✔️ Are encouraged to attend weekly meetings to refresh mod skills & problem solve
✔️Join the member support rooms as a active listener not as a police officer
✔️ Give up their time to moderate the rooms and provide support sessions for the members
✔️ Give 3 verbal warnings before using the warning system ( though the moderator can decide what is best for the room and situation at the time)
✔️ Use warning system which gives 3 pop up warnings before muting the user disregarding the rules. (unless they are Red Rules e.g spam, suicidal or underage/ should be on the adult side.)
✔️ Have to follow certain guidelines and behaviour system for being a mod and are upheld to these by Community Manager @Kate and the Group Support Mentor for the room they moderate in.
✔️ Have their powers/ role removed when they continually disregard rules of moderator and the room. Reports are taken very seriously however you will not know the outcome of these due to confidentiality, this may leave you feeling we have taken no action.
Chatroom Moderators Do not
X Get Paid
X Have the power to ban someone
X Always have support team badges, these are for people leading discussions not moderators.
X Have the authority to discuss specific members with others
Do you have any questions on what a chatroom moderator can and cannot do?
According to the 7cups moderator handbook, chat moderators can't enforce their own personal triggers on a group chat. If you are personally triggered while modding then you must step back and stop modding. You can then connect to a peer supporter or you can log into your member account for support!
For example, if CAPS triggers you. There is technically no rule against members using caps. Forcing them to stop is enforcement of your own personal triggers on the chat. So as long as the rest of the chat doesn't have a problem with it, you are not allowed to mod it. Also if only 1 person is triggered it's important to encourage people to use their personal mutes before you mod the entire chat based on 1 user
Moderators shouldn't ever be condescending to members and assume that just because they are on a member account that they aren't aware of chat guidelines & moderator trainings
It's incredibly condescending for moderators to speak to a member who has been on the site according to their member bio over 2 years as a newbie...all you have to do is look at my bio and realize that I am familiar and aware of the chat rules & procedures so please don't speak to me as if you are never wrong and I'm not familiar with the guidelines
