language learning hobby

sorry, i can't read and respond to all or most replies for the time being, but i hope all of your language learning journeys are going well!

i still haven't gotten back to language learning; mainly because i have so much work to catch up on for school. also, i feel a bit lost with the language i'm trying to learn. there isn't a great way to learn it when you're starting out.

i'm learning sign language and i'm aiming to start learning russian

Hi, that is a cool thread topic to start with.

I learned French a decade ago, i could speak fluent with the vocabulary I had back then.

But the language isn't so much a loyal friend, when you leave it for a little while, it might abondon you for so much longer.

I have learned ( and still learning )some Arabic to better understand Islamic texts which are so deeply meaningful and interesting.

My worst part is in computer programming languages which I couldn't quite build friendly bonds with.

update: i've started back on japanese! it's been about a week since i started up again :)

all your stories encouraged me to start learning again. one post made me realize what started my interest in language. when i was young, like 6 or so, i had a deaf friend, and learned some phrases so i could communicate with her. around that same time, there was a deaf employee at a restaurant near me, and one time i decided to sign "thank you" to him. i could see how happy it made him and seeing that made me happy.

i've heard similar stories that show that unexpectedly knowing someone's language can really bring a smile to their face. that's what i want to do.

i don't remember much sign language now, but that was the first time i tried to learn a language and since then i've been doing it and loving it. i'm sticking with japanese for now even though it's a very different language from english and takes a long time to learn. i want to be able to travel to japan because i know someone who has been to many countries and japan is one of his favorites. i want to give myself a challenge, see the world through another lens (language changes how you perceive everything!), understand another culture that is really interesting to me, read japanese books and haikus and play japanese games and listen to shonen knife and understand it all in its original form. also, i just think it's a beautiful language and a beautiful country with so much history.

right now, i've learned hiragana & katakana, and i'm working my way through the kanji. it might take months to learn kanji alone, maybe a year or two or more, but i'm willing to do that! i don't expect to see results right away. i have time.

i hope you all continue learning your target languages, and if you haven't started yet, turn that goal into a reality! have fun with it. remind yourself of your personal reasons for learning it. take your time.

@faron I am currently trying to learn Korean, Japanese, and Chinese simultaneously. I've been learning Korean on and off throughout the years but decided recently that I'm going to follow through with it. Then decided it wouldn't be so bad if I took on Japanese and Chinese since I've been interested in those languages for so long.

I guess the idea of being able to talk to more people than just those who speak English makes me feel better- makes me feel like my chances of connecting with another human being increase.

I speak multiple languages and for the past 5-6 years I've been trying to teach myself Norwegian 😊 It's a great hobby because the language itself is a mixture of English and German, both of which I speak, so it's like revision and learning at the same time hahaha Just by using Duolingo and absorbing the language through media (films, music etc.) I must say that I have gotten quite good at it!

Learning new languages is extremely useful as it improves your cognitive abilities, such as memory, problem-solving and concentration, which is why I strongly recommend it as a hobby.

@faron learning Spanish is one of my hobbies...the reason that I want to learn Spanish is because I have some friends from Mexico so their first language is Spanish and they always try to hard to learn English...I could give back.
