in a historical/anthropological sense a lot of what could be considered drama, performance and theatre grew out ritualistic* practices, religious practices.
*and when you think about callous criticisms of religion to this day, 'not too much of a surprise'.

When it comes to ~'making fun of Canadian niceness' if the implication is that you are complacent w/how rough and callous your regional demographics are (whether part of a documentary regional stereotype or not), then that is sad b/c that sure as h--l is a sad way to dismiss 'the first experience(d)'/initial mental unwellness prevention measure.
