The red band trailer for 'Mortal kombat legends: scorpion's revenge' reminds me of how as far as R-rated like Western action animation it's historically been a fairly slim record, only having picked up steadily over the course of the last decade and I'm not really counting 'motion comics', which are cool. I'm not too sure if 'Turok' for it's gruesomeness actually got an R-rating and I'm not counting 'Heavy metal 2000' not only b/c of how much more lengthy that might make things but b/c imo it remained somewhat obscure having come out in a pre-'social media boom' internet, not helping it's audience reception range.

I can only imagine how I'm not the only one thinking how if this a WB production they should've just gotten Phil Bourassa to animate instead of doing whatever they did, which is 'okay '~' ' but still seems like an attempt to 'cut corners' w/ animation seems more 90's and reminds me of the late 00's animated 'Turok' , though to be fair it could be a nod to the old 'Mortal kombat: the journey begins' promol and 'Defenders of the realm' cartoon series.

Aside: Years ago, I remember feeling similar let down by the how the 'Nicktoons' Ninja turtles were following a more cartoony CGI look after the finale of the 2k3 'Fox box' era TMNT was imo the last in the personally thrilling line of Western action dating back to the 90's..though to it's credit the show's 'vibes'/sensibilities' made the 80's-90's Fred Wolf TMNT work out better. Would still vouch for Bourassa depicting the turtles anytime, though.

When I consider how 'Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay', 'JL:Dark' and the upcoming 'JL: Dark' Apokolips war' have recieved R ratings, I

i) wonder if it's going to be based on the ~'Darkseid war' storyline from maybe ~4-6 yrs ago (?). From what I recall this was really like one of the first major stories where 'the new 52' DC assembles had their moment to shine. I'm sorry, I mainly stopped following American 'big two' comics, around the ~2k12 b/c of 'the new 52' and 'Marvel NOW!' seeming like nice places to check out, if the end of 'Phase 1 MCU' had been achieved w/'the Avengers' movie.

ii) a part of me feel like this has been made 'as a back up' if 'Young justice season 4' has mediocre reception w/it's still ongoing Darkseid/New god related plot w/the justification that 'JLDark: Apokolips' will 'wrap up' the ' DC Universe Animated Original Movies' which have been following the continuity after the release of the surprisingly lurid 'Flashpoint' adaptation.

..'_' dang, I did not think they'd 'hold back' and w/a storyline which wasn't too far back from it's release/the final big DC event, I really followed.

Maybe, vice-versa if it's 'YJ season 4' which turns out mediocre..

ii) I kind of see either event (the 'JL:Apokolips war' or 'Young justice season 4') as quasi-attempts to adapt 'Final crisis' from around the end of the decade before the last one..@_@ @~@ that was kind of confusing, particularly w/the 'Superman goes on a side mission w/ the one woman connected to the Monitors' story and I agreed w/ a Linkara video which helped things make more sense. Grant Morrison [has his wild reputation but] he tries to cram to many ideas at once, -- '_' I feel that it's more a pity and telling when it happened in a big event w/so much of DC's IP's/mythos at stake in contrast to his arguable more amateur days of the late 80's to early 90's run on 'Animal man' where it kind of panned out in a cool way w/the first ~24 issues..even if (having read the whole ~89 issue enchillada online), I feel that his ideas were being repeated w/only a few adjustments even if the artwork remained gorgeous).

Heck, I remember and still sort of think years later how 'Flashpoint' was made as a more comprehensive 'reboot' attempt b/c of how muddled the outcome of Darkseid actually getting 'the anti-life equation'

'~' considering the pre-'New 52' quasi-failure of 'Final crisis', it makes me wonder how the dude has still remained so menacing sans his own attibutes..I suppose that something, something, 'Darkseid war', 'baby Darkseid' and 'DC Metal knights'(?) would provide answers.

I would like to say how from what I saw in the trailer for 'JLDark: Apokolips' I'm curious to know, just how closely they are following the actual 'Darkseid war' event. Like, in the comics a handful of years back was John Constantine actually involved?, I mean I could see the strategic value to having a magic user to possibly get at an arguable blindspot Darkseid has but still..in the comics?. The Damian and Raven friendship seems a more recent and uniquely 'DCU animated original movie' thing to touch in, for instance.

I can also understand at this pt. if a 'Final crisis' vibe is being employed (I'm kind of expecting that/wouldn't be surprised if that's also a thing for 'Young justice season 4')

I think to myself how Darkseid in such media (1) compensates for the muddled attempt at bringing him in via the live action 'Justice league' movie and (2) something on this scale being adapted is heartening considering around the turn of the year the 'Arrowverse' actually did their own 'Crisis on infinite earths' broadcast, thankfully before COVID-19 made going on more cloudy for various TV show seasons.

On a less sentimental/corporate side 'Time Warner' focusing their production efforts on streamed and broadcast media makes sense as far as a 'they take the high road and we take the low road' approach to competing w/Marvel which has more than saturated the movie industry w/it's pre-'Phase 4' stuff but it's riskier to do that (movies) at this pt. b/c of how mixed the build up to 'Justice league' was, even if 'Aquaman' and 'Shazam' are showing a better direction...pero toma tu tiempo/take your time, though.

I would like to say how in a quasi- post-broadcast media environment it would make sense how Western action animation could actually gain steam and 'have learned pointers' from ~30 yrs of anime to boot. If it mainly continues w/the uber-lurid allure as a drive though, I worry that sooner or later we'll arrive at a stream of 'B-production schock' w/various flaws not unlike what hindsight to old 80's,90's and early 00's anime releases put on the spot w/Bennet 'the Sage' White's 'Anime abandon' series..

..but to try to adapt the more 'drama based' genre comics..this is where the DC showcase short becomes a factor as far as pointing direction..b/c I think that a competently adapted animated series take on the old 'Sandman' series would be more drama based like how 'A scanner darkly' tried to be even w/rotoscoping was, albeit w/a strong presence of dark fantasy tropes throughout.

Another competent drop in the non-anime 'animation is not only for kids' bucket.

^1 Years ago w/a 'Superman/shazam' animated special which I enjoyed, I also like the inclusion of a few other shorts particularly the Green arrow one.
