Whispers in the Hollow Chamber

The candle sputters in its brass holder, casting a feeble halo upon these pages, though most of the room lies buried in shadow. Tonight, the silence feels heavier than stone, as though the walls themselves are listening, holding their breath in a dreadful anticipation that chills the soul. Outside, the wind claws against the shutters like a desperate thing begging entrance.

I walked the corridors earlier, their length swallowed by darkness, the portraits watching me with eyes too alive for mere pigment. The sensation of being followed, by whom or by what, I dare not name, clung to me like a ghostly presence. Even the floorboards seemed to sigh beneath my weight, mourning steps long since taken.

Sleep evades me, yet dreams haunt me still. I see the cemetery again, moonlight carving pale shapes from the marble angels. Their wings looked fractured, broken by time, and yet they seemed to lean closer, whispering secrets through cracked stone mouths. I awoke gasping, yet with the bitter taste of earth on my tongue, as though I had clawed my way from a grave. It was not the first time I had dreamt of such a place, nor the first time I had woken with the taste of death in my mouth.

Why does this house breathe like a living thing? Why do I feel its pulse in the walls? Perhaps madness has finally chosen me as its companion. And still, some part of me longs for the darkness to draw closer, to wrap itself around me with the intimacy of a lover. Only then will I understand what it wants. Only then will I know my place in this house, or perhaps, its place in me.

@ScorpiaD

Your words are so captivating .

Illuminating.

Shining a light on the loneliness that can consume us.

And rob us of our peace.

Our sleep .

Niggling.

Eating away.

Silently taking grip.

Haunting.

Honest.

Thanks for sharing.

I love your poetry 💜💕
