Social loafing 🤔

Social loafing refers to the tendency for individuals to exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This can occur because:

1. Diffusion of responsibility: Individuals may feel their contribution won't significantly impact the outcome.

2. Lack of accountability: Without individual evaluation, people may slack off.

3. Motivation: Group members might rely on others to do the work.

Social loafing can lead to decreased productivity and efficiency in group projects. Have you experienced this in a group setting?

@crispMango3093 I certainly have Mango and it was to do with lack of accountability, where the guilty party was very much aware there was to be no individual evaluation for each person's contribution, so they completely phoned it in. It was exasperating. it needs to be renamed anti-social loafing!

@DemiMondaineThe lack of accountability can definitely lead to social loafing. It's frustrating when some group members don't pull their weight, especially when others have to compensate.

The term "anti-social loafing" is a great suggestion! Maybe "free-riding" or "slacking" could also fit. Have you found any strategies that work to prevent social loafing in group projects?

@crispMango3093 great question, Mango. What helps is introducing the very thing they fear - public accountability - by means of requesting everyone to update their progress weekly on a public forum. This gives visibility and an element of competition. Too often the loafers are allowed to go under the radar; this means group work becomes less than the sum of its parts, which ought not to be the case.
