Aristotle was the first to deeply address the philosophical question of art. Unlike his teacher, Plato, Aristotle supported art and considered it to be useful and meaningful. He believed that our bodies and minds need to experience the full spectrum of emotions in order to achieve balance. From sorrow to excitement, every emotion plays a vital role in helping us truly live.

And when life doesn’t offer those emotional experiences directly, art steps in. Through stories, music, paintings, and performances, art stirs those feelings within us. Once we experience them, we are left with a sense of emotional relief and clarity—what Aristotle called catharsis
